Lots of families have a pet at home that means the world to them. We treat our pets as if they are a member of our family. Svetlana and Yuriy Panteleenko of Russia have a pet that is very dear to them.
However, their pet happens to be a 300 lb 7-foot tall bear named Stepan.
Stepan is just like any other household pet. He walks around the family’s property and goes in and out of the house. He plays in the garden. He wrestles around and roughhouses with Yuriy for fun.
He learns tricks like how to high five and play catch. Football is his favorite game to play. His humans even brush and groom his massive furry coat.
When it’s time for supper, Stepan gets fed from the dinner table. Except Stepan actually sits down at the family table since he’s too big to fit underneath it.
His favorite dish is a canned of condensed milk, but he also eats porridge and about 55 pounds of fish, vegetables, and eggs each day.
“He’s got so many talents and loves a picnic,” Svetlana said. “It’s a wonder he doesn’t eat us out of house and home.”
Stepan, however, is smarter than the average bear. He apparently likes to help out with family chores like watering the plants, according to Daily Mail and likes to watch TV on the couch with his family.
But what Stepan loves most is to cozy up and enjoy snuggles and kisses from his family.
“Stepan likes nothing more than to cuddle with us on the sofa at night while we’re watching television,” Svetlana told Daily Mail. “He absolutely loves people and is a really sociable bear – despite what people might think, he is not aggressive at all. We have never been bitten by Stephan.”
Svetlana and Yuriy adopted Stepan about 24 years ago when he was just a little baby.
“When we adopted him, he was only three-months-old and had been found by hunters in the forest having lost his mother,” Svetlana explains. “He was in a very bad condition.”
Since Stepan grew up around humans he is very much a domesticated gentle soul and a big people person.
Svetlana and Yuriy treat Stepan like he is their own child, proving that even wild animals, like bears, and humans can find a way to live together peacefully.
