Beagle Adopts Baby Possum That Was Abandoned By Mother

March 11th, 2019

When a distraught beagle in Australia lost her litter of puppies recently, she found a new sense of purpose caring for a baby possum who had been abandoned by its mother. The video of the beagle and the little possum was first released by Nine News Australia, and if you are an animal lover it is something you just have to see.

The beagle featured in the video is named Molly, and unfortunately, she has been having a pretty rough time recently.

It turns out, Molly’s entire litter of puppies died at birth, and the poor beagle didn’t know what to think.

“Molly was very upset and she was looking for her puppies everywhere,” owner Elle Moyle told Nine News Australia.

It was obvious that the distraught beagle was very sad and confused. However, she soon discovered something that would completely change everything.

“While she was looking for the puppies that had died, she stumbled across an abandoned possum. They’ve just been inseparable,” Moyle said.

While Molly no longer had puppies of her own to care for, her discovery of the baby possum gave her a chance to be a mother again.

Although the two belong to different species, she took to the job immediately of raising and caring for the little marsupial. It is certain that without Molly’s loving help, the possum would have also died too.

Now, together they both run around the ranch all day and are basically inseparable. The family named the new addition to the ranch Poss.

“They’re an unlikely pair, and I think that possum thought Mol was her mother and vice versa,” Moyle said

Because the cattle ranch is pretty big and there is a lot of exploring to do, Poss normally hitches a ride on Molly’s back.

The two are very happy together, and really, it seems like they found each other at the perfect time.

“It’s certainly uplifted her mood, they both needed each other I think so it’s been a fantastic relationship,” added Sara Moyle.

Although, at the end of the day, Poss is still a possum and is more comfortable sleeping in a tree than on the ground with Molly. However, Molly never strays too far away. While Poss is napping up in the limbs, Molly does the same at the base of the tree. Then whenever they both wake up, Poss climbs down and jumps onto the beagle’s back, ready for their next adventure.

Of course, people on Twitter absolutely love the duo, and immediately after the video was released, it started going viral.

One Twitter user had this to say:

It also clearly doesn’t matter what species you belong to, for many mammals, feelings are universal.

The overwhelming consensus, however, was that Molly and Poss are just downright cute.

It’s hard to argue with that, and here’s to hoping that this fantastic pair remain friends for many years to come.
