In a world where divorces occur left and right, it would serve to see even one couple that stays committed for as long as an Indian Kerala couple that has been together for almost 82 years. The longevity in their relationship is a beacon of inspiration for many others who want to be in a relationship with their better half.
Let’s take a closer look at this adorable senior couple and how they managed to stay together for such a long time.
Who Is This Lovely Old Couple?
Meet the husband Madhavan Nair (100 years old) and Meenakshi Amma (99 years old), both hailing from Kerala’s Kottayam district. They both got hitched in the Malayalam calendar year 1111, which according to the Christian calendar is the year 1936. The couple just recently celebrated 82 years of their marriage back in December 2017, which also happened to be the 100th birthday of Madhavan Nair.
Even after all this time, both Nair and Amma still blushed whenever someone asks them about their wedding day. If that doesn’t set up potential couple goals, there’s no telling what else will.
According to Madhavan:
“It was nothing unusual, just a simple affair. Not like how weddings are held nowadays.”
As a matter of fact, both Madhavan and Meenakshi studied together at the same school at the tender age of 8 and eventually developed feelings for one another as they grew before they decided to get hitched.
Madhavan says, “We studied in the same school, so there were no formalities when it came to our wedding.”
He goes on to say that they never used to talk to each other that much because in his own words, “What do school kids have to talk to each other about?”
But before that could happen, they would move to different schools, possibly to complete whatever programs had appealed to them the most.
Interestingly, Madhavan Nair used to be an active member of the Congress party before he retired. And while odd working hours as well as long leaves from home or exactly fun for him, his wife Meenakshi never expressed any hard feelings or would want to make her husband feel bad in any way since he would always return home after work.
And now Madhavan just spends the rest of his days with his wife Meenakshi at their house near Pallikkathode in the Kottayam district in Kerala.
How They Got Married
Madhavan says, “The wedding took place at her (Meenakshi’s) house. I tied the thaali around her neck, gave her the pudava (saree) and there was a meal afterward. That’s how simple the wedding was.”
He also said, “A pandal would be erected in the compound and that’s where weddings were conducted.”
Madhavan further explains that during their time, nobody ever got married in temples or witness events like young people eloping as some in the community do now. He also said that weddings used to happen at the bride’s house.
And when asked if they felt any weight during their 82-year marriage, the two of them just smiled in response. That was just beautiful, emotional and everything that comes with the feels train. You can’t have a better response than that now can?
