These Ohio police officers had thought that they had seen everything, until they came across two Amish men operating a horse and buggy while drinking a 12- pack and blasting music from a stereo. As the cops attempted to pull the two over, they bolted, leaving their horse trotting on pulling their buggy of beer behind. The scene was like something straight out of a Hollywood B movie.

Alcohol isn’t banned in the Amish community as a whole but often times it is looked down on and discouraged. It is banned in some sects of the religion, and though it’s unclear what sect these men were from, their reaction to being pulled over gives us an idea. One thing is for sure, their minimalist lifestyle doe not include the use of stereos. Once the police got the horse stopped safely, they found a case of Michelob Ultra, other open alcohol bottles, and the sound system. Operating any vehicle under the influence, even non-motorized, is a crime so the buggy was towed and the horse was taken in until the owners came forward.

What started out as a routine traffic stop has turned into a real mystery for deputy Eric Hermsdorfer. The two men in question lept off the buggy and ran into the woods and haven’t identified themselves since or attempted to retrieve their belongings. If they do come forward, they could be charged not only with driving under the influence, but also with failure to comply with a deputy’s commands. “Maybe theres just a fear of consequences- and that would be a reality check for them, that there are consequences.” he said.

This wouldn’t be the first example of Amish breaking the rules. A few months ago there was another Ohioan that ran a stop sign while driving his buggy, and then admitted to drinking 10 beers beforehand. Another example came a few years ago, four Amish people were arrested with for drinking underage, crashing their buggy into other buggies and then fleeing the scene. These examples show that these young people believe that they can get away with violations like these with little consequences, but deputy Hersdorfer is hoping these men will take the high road and collect their buggy and horse, and face the punishment.
