Someone who was just entering the bathroom in the Las Vegas airport was surprised to find a small and adorable 3-month old puppy just laying around, abandoned by its owner. However, there was also a note next to the miniature chihuahua explaining why the little pup was left behind.
The handwritten note was simply heartbreaking to read.
“Hi, I’m Chewy. My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford to get me on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option.”
The woman who left her pet behind in the bathroom felt like she was completely out of options and wanted Chewy to have a better life as she couldn’t take him with her.
Luckily, Chewy was quickly found and the person who found him could quickly give the dog the attention and help that it deserved. The dog was then transferred to a local dog rescue organization, Connor and Millie Rescue. Upon hearing the news and reading the note, Darlene Blair of the organization became quite emotional. “I cried,” she said to WGNTV.
“This one really got to me. You could tell by the way the note was written that the woman was in dire stress and she didn’t want to give him up and she couldn’t take him with her,” the woman Connor and Millie Rescue said.
Unfortunately, these tragic domestic violence events forced Chewy’s owner to leave him behind, but in the end, the dog could be rescued and is in good hands now.
Noah’s Animal House is an organization that assists victims of domestic violence and their children to still be able to visit and take care of their pets. The organization has a special boarding house in the Las Vegas area which has helped 1,000 pets and families over the past ten years.
“There’s absolutely an option out there,” Lori Nelson of Noah’s Animal House said. “The animal is equally a member [of] the family as anyone else, and it’s vital that when you’re leaving a domestic violence situation, that your pet can come with you,” Lori continues.
Although Chewy’s owner hasn’t been found, Lori and Blair want people to know that they can always ask for help in case there’s something wrong, as leaving pets behind in airports isn’t recommended.
“I know it’s hard when you’re in that situation to trust someone, but there are good people out there — and if you’re in that situation and you need help to take your dog with you, try not to be too afraid to ask for help,” Darlene said.
