Chunkie and her savior

Chunkie is a five-month old pitbull who was recently rescued from an abusive home.

When she was found, the puppy had a serious scabies infection which has destroyed her skin and gray fur. If this isn’t bad enough, Chunkie was discovered abandoned, soaking wet, and tied outside to a post during a heavy downpour of rain.

But instead of becoming happier after being rescued and taken to a shelter where she could escape the weather, Chunkie appeared to be inconsolably sad and lonely according to the shelter staff caring for her.

However, her mood would soon change when a visitor arrived to check on her.

Mike Thawley is a firefighter from Sacramento, California’s Fire Station 14 and Chunkie’s savior.

He was the one who found the poor puppy and brought her to the shelter.

Reunited at last

As you can see from on the video that was originally shared by the shelter, the lonely Chunkie immediately changed her mood when she saw Mike approach her cage in her temporary home.

It looks like she and Mike really bonded together in the short time that they’ve know each other. Just look at the adorable dog cling to the firefighter!

What a change! She’s finally acting like a puppy of her age. We bet those shelter staff were shocked as well.

She probably missed her new friend and was anxious about when they would see each other again.

Mike first decided to foster her and take her home to her new family which is Mike’s wife and kids. They eventually adopted the puppy to make it official.

After the shelter administrators saw how well these two bond together, there was no way that they could bear to separate the two again.

Chunkie really deserves a real and loving home which would give her the care and love she truly deserves. Mike’s pretty awesome too as far as we’re concerned.

An abundance of kind-hearted firefighters

We can’t help but be reminded of a similar story about the Santa Monica firefighter who saved a 10-year-old dog from a burning house and spent more than 15 minutes giving him lifesaving CPR.

He did this despite other attempts at resuscitating the dog having failed. Refusing to give up, the firefighter gave the dog CPR as well as oxygen and called his name again and again until the dog started breathing on his own.

The firefighter, Andrew Klein, was heard yelling “Come on, bud, come on!” to the limp and unconscious the old Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu called Nalu, according to a photographer who happened to be on site and saw the commotion.

“Our goal is to save people, and sometimes we’re not able to do that despite our best efforts. But to have a success story just like this, even with Nalu being a dog … he’s a life and he’s a life that matters.”

– Klein in an interview with ABC7
