Meet Cosmo — a massive 130-pound St Bernard who was abandoned at the Hearts United for Animals shelter by his breeder. No one knows why exactly the breeder sent Cosmo to the shelter, but such is life.
Although the dog was friendly enough, he did have some peculiarities (he’s gigantic).
He didn’t really understand his size and was always trying to fit himself in unusually small places… probably because that’s what he was used to, growing up without a home. That didn’t stop a woman named Jane from falling in love with him though.
The whole story is told in a heartwarming YouTube video made by The Dodo.
Jane and her husband were looking at pictures of dogs online and stumbled upon Cosmo’s adorable face. Immediately, they knew that they had to adopt him.
There was only one minor issue — they lived in upstate New York and the Hearts United for Animals shelter was all the way in Nebraska. Obviously, they made the easy choice.
“When I decided I was going to fly to Nebraska, rent a car, and drive home with a 130-pound dog, I was pretty sure that most of the world would think I was crazy,” Jane said in the video.
Okay, a little crazy, we agree. However, some animals are just worth it!
“There was a picture of Cosmo (online) just looking up at the camera like ‘please take me home’, and he was looking right at us,” said Jane.
Although Cosmo had been through a lot of ups and downs in his life and was a little bit confused as to why he was in the shelter, he was still the cuddliest St Bernard around.
Jayne and family greeted him upon their arrival to Nebraska with open arms.
“I don’t know if Cosmo has any understanding of what’s happening, but I think he understands there’s a human here who wants to give him some love and he’s pretty happy about it,” said Jane.
Unsurprisingly, Cosmo didn’t really like getting in the car at first and it often took a harness, a leash, and three people to hoist him into the back.
While he was definitely a little skittish about the long road trip home, Jane added that eventually the giant pup got used to it.
When they finally got back to New York, Cosmo continued to maintain his calm demeanor, however, you could tell he was very happy to be there.
As far as they know, it is the first real house Cosmo has ever lived in.
“It’s nice to see him on a big space, see him spread out and put his belly on a cool floor, and just know he’s finally staying in a space, a place where can feel happy and comfortable,” Jayne said.
Cosmo is now living a great life with Jayne, her husband, and their two kids. He also shares the house with two other dogs and several rabbits. Luckily, everyone has been able to get along great and they are all now one giant happy family — some more giant than others.
Thanks to Jayne and her husband, Cosmo never has to worry about fitting himself into tiny spaces not meant for a dog of his size again, although he still might try.
