We could learn a lot from the kindness children display, especially during these difficult times. 9-year-old Kamryn Johnson and her friends came up with an exemplary idea to keep Summer fun and also bring change. This inspiring team decided to start selling hand-braided bracelets with all proceeds going to support Black-owned businesses and their community in Minneapolis.
Youth Bringing Change
These heavy times in our world have motivated people to come together in marvelous ways and this honorable group of friends is definitely setting the example. As a kid Summer boredom can be real and that’s what fueled Kamryn and her friend’s brilliant idea. Kamryn’s mom saw this as a valuable teaching moment and suggested that the money should go towards helping others in need.
Bracelets Filled With Love
That made Kamryn and her friends even more excited to start making their bracelets and “Kamryn & Friends: Bracelets for Unity and Justice” hit the ground running! They first launched their bracelet sale on May 30th and since then have raised almost $100,000 to help support Black-owned businesses in Minneapolis and families in need.
One String Goes A Long Way
Even though they were selling their bracelets for just $5, people donated plenty more ranging from $20-$100.
Kamryn’s father Ron Johnson who is a former NFL player is over the moon proud of his daughter and her friends. Ron told CNN,
“She has a huge heart and simply wanted to be of help in whatever way she could,”
“She and her friends are finding ways to feed the families of Minneapolis and give back to their community in the way they know how.”
Children Of The Future
Small business owners in Minneapolis have already been deeply affected by the coronavirus pandemic and now the protests surrounding the tragic death of George Floyd have put even more of a setback on small businesses. With people using this sensitive time as an opportunity to break into and loot local businesses it has devastated Minneapolis communities. That’s why Kamryn and her friends have been a ray of light during these darker times.
Braiding The Community Back Together
On top of selling their unique colorful bracelets, they have created a GoFundMe page for people who want to donate to their cause. “Kamryn & Friends: Bracelets for Unity and Justice” has made a remarkable impact on their community helping everyone during these tough times. Kamryn’s dad Ron informed CNN saying,
“We want to be there for black businesses, especially those that don’t have insurance agents to help them out, to let them know they have people that will protect and fight for them.”
The money the “Kamryn & Friends” have raised will also go towards feeding their community and providing essential items for families in need. These outstanding kids could teach adults a thing or two about coming together.
A Remarkable Youngster
“When I’m older, I want to help people in need, just like I’m doing now.” words by the incredible Kamryn
Children truly are the future and Kamryn and her friends are definitely the future we’d all want to see. Sometimes all it takes is a dream and some string to tie an entire community together.
Go Kamryn and her outstanding team!
