A Project For The Long-Haul

Amidst the madness occurring throughout this pandemic, people are still finding ways to keep busy. Some of the more popular ways include a multitude of DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects that allow us to channel our inner creativity. One of those projects that stands out is a stunning floor mosaic that will leave you in awe.

Kelly Graham of Camias Jewelry Designs is the talented creator of this 7,500 penny mosaic design. She shared her creation after an extensive, but worthwhile journey and it’s held up really nicely over the past 5 years.

“I made my own penny floor in my foyer room,” said Graham in a post that has taken the internet by storm. Kelly was inspired to share her vision to the masses after Kat Von D shared her floor made of 28,928 pennies.

“The process of making the floor was sorting the pennies, then I caulked each one on the back for a nice adhesion to the existing tile. After I put the last penny down, I waited a few days for the caulking to solidify and then I grouted. I waited a full week for the grout to harden and set and finally poured a resin coating on top. There is no penny odor, the floor isn’t slippery, and its 5 years later and it still looks good!” said Kelly.

No Pain, No Problem

She revealed that she was actually a mechanist before she stepped into working with jewelry and that she credits that time in helping her with getting better at spatial orientation.

Kelly recalled her time in the creative process as “a cathartic experience I needed in my life and maybe that’s why the design worked as it did.” The journey was one filled with many decision changes and a whole lot of patience to boot. The artist had to sit down and ponder exactly what kind of pattern she would be using.

“The process was me having no idea what I was doing so I YouTube some basic tutorials.”

Apparently, it took her 3 weeks to compose her desired pattern for her project. That’s an incredible feat no matter who you are. The fact that she could remain that focused and patient throughout the initial stages shows her level of commitment to long-term projects like these.

“I never wanted to give up,” Kelly said, “If anything, I was completely dedicated and motivated to finish.” Well, that pretty much sums up why she was able to pull through in the end.

Reaping The Fruits Of Labor

The mosaic covers about a 6x6ft area. The mosaic is largely composed of separating old and new pennies that would should the different layers of the mosaic pattern. After posting the image and sharing it, it has gathered more than 57k likes and as well as 245k shares.

Nowadays, Kelly keeps busy by managing and sustaining her own website filled with her very own unique designs. She takes tremendous pride in her work and has basically described herself as a “complete one-person show who does it all,”.

This is truly an incredible masterpiece of art. The amount of immeasurable patience that it took to complete it is really mind-boggling. It goes to show how far one is willing to go to pursue their passion and desires. As Kelly put it simply, “The inner muse spoke and I listened.”. Hats off to you, Kelly, for a job well done!
