Two young boys were growing up in Romania in the late 1930s when their world was turned completely upsidedown. German Nazis invaded Romania in 1940 during World War II. Their families fled and were able to escape, but in opposite directions and the two cousins assumed they would never see each other again.
The cousins grew up in Romania but were separated during the holocaust.
Simon Mairowitz and Morris Sana were young boys who spent many hours together as they grew up in Romania. Simon’s family fled to the United Kingdom while Morris’ family went to Israel.
It would have been terrifying for the young boys with such an unknown future and leaving their friends behind. With no other way to communicate, the boys prepared for the worst, thinking they would never get to be in each other’s company ever again.
Years later, the families connected online.
Through the power of social media, Morris’ niece had been doing some family research and stumbled across the daughter of Simon. The two ladies began sharing stories back and forth and decided to meet up in Tel Aviv, Israel. Morris and Simon’s families attended and were able to catch the incredible reunion on video.
75 years later, they met again in Israel.
Unable to communicate and not knowing if the other was alive was hard for them to live through. Being torn apart at such a young age during a terrible event would have been hard to deal with, not knowing the outcome. Morris, now 87 years old, was able to see his long-lost friend again.
Speaking through tears, Morris immediately gives Simon a big hug and says “I’m glad to see you.”
The whole family is in tears as they watch the two meet again after so many years have passed since they were taken away from each other. The two plan to see each other often now and spend many hours together that would have otherwise been taken away. They have a lot of time to make up for.
“We’ve got each other now, and we can see each other,” Simon tells Morris as the two embrace in a long-overdue hug.
Millions of lives were lost in the holocaust during World War II.
It is estimated that six million Jews and many more thousands were murdered during the holocaust in extermination camps. There were six concentration camps in Poland where innocent people were brought to be killed: Auschwitz, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor, and Treblinka.
Germans occupied many of the surrounding countries during this time such as Poland, Greece, Lithuania, and Romania among many others. The horrifying events led to one of the largest massacres this world has ever seen.
Sadly, many younger generations are unaware of the horrifying events that many of their grandparents and great-grandparents endured. May we never forget the events that led to such destruction. So thankful to hear of a happy ending for two people who survived such a terrible time.
