It was 2006. A massive storm had just hit the North Friesland coast of the Netherlands. Multiple islands sprang up in the coastal lowlands and then a terrible thing occurred. 100 horses were marooned on an island with no way to reach them.
Days went by and the horses grew more and more weak. Multiple rescue attempts were made to no avail. It looked like the horses would perish. A group of women, however, refused to give up on them.
Seven brave women who were experienced horse riders met up the next day. Led by Norma Miedema, they pulled off a rescue that was nothing short of extraordinary. For their courageous rescue, the Dutch government honored the seven women and dedicated a memorial for their bravery. Watch the video of the incredible rescue below.
