Just because you have a clothing mishap doesn’t mean you have to toss your favorite garments. Instead, keep these 30 sewing hacks in your back pocket to help you through all your fashion emergencies or when you’re in need of a style update.
5-Minute Crafts provides visual steps on how to fix the most common whoopsies, make sewing easier, and even add a little flair to your clothing. So grab your needle and thread and let’s get to work! (video below)
Fix That Missing Jeans Button
Don’t you hate it when you fall in love with a pair of jeans, only to have the button pop off and go missing? Ugh! But instead of buying another pair or having to use a special tool to attach a new button – try this trick first.
Using a large coin, a circular swatch of denim, and your needle and thread, it’s possible to create a replacement. Simply sew the coin inside of the denim material. Then, sew it to your jeans where the button used to be. Now that’s brilliant!
Say Goodbye To Yucky Kid Sleeves
Kids are amazing, but the sleeves of their sweatshirts? Not so much. With all the dirt and nose wipes the wrists can get pretty gross. On top of that, they can get stretched out too.
Did you know that you can save their sweatshirts using a pair of socks? In the video, 5-Minute Crafts demonstrates how to cut off the wrists and replace them with the top portions of socks. Look how neat they can turn out!
Replace Drawstrings With Ease
There’s nothing more frustrating than accidentally pulling the drawstring out of your sweatshirt hood or pants. Ironically, with how easy they come out, it’s not easy getting one back in…until now.
Here’s what you do. Thread your drawstring through a straw and staple the end to hold it in place. This will help make guiding the string into the hole and to the other side a breeze. Problem fixed!
Give Your Buttons Some Style
For those who like to look good from head to toe, try adding some cute details to your buttons. Using a needle and some colored thread, you can very simply create mini-flowers! Watch the video below to see exactly how they did it.
Get The Perfect Stitch
If you want your stitches to be perfectly spaced then there’s a genius trick you have to try. Using a marker, draw two lines on your thumb representing the distance you’d like between each stitch.
Now, let your thumb be your guide! As you’re sewing – your marker lines can help you keep the stitches evenly spaced.
Keep Your Pins And Needles In Place
Sewing can be a lot of fun, that is until you step on a needle – ouch! Keep them from falling on the floor with this clever magnet hack. All you have to do is hot glue a magnet to the back of a small plate.
That’s it… Your pins and needles will now stick to the plate instead of inside your foot. Pretty cool, huh?
No More Dragging Jeans
Who needs a tailor when you can easily shorten your pants at home yourself? Start by cuffing them to the desired length and then sew across just below the jean’s edge. Check out the photo below for a visual of where to do so.
Once you flip them back, give the jean bottoms a good iron to smooth them out. Presto, pants that are now the perfect length! Be sure to watch the video to see the steps in action.
Cheer Up Your Clothes With Cherries
There’s no saying your sweater collars have to be boring. Instead, try spicing them up with an adorable cherry pattern. All you need is some red and green thread and a needle.
With a few steps and a short amount of time, you can create miniature cherries that would look darling around any edge. Take a closer peek at the tutorial to see how they did it.
