Did you know that groups of hummingbirds are called, Charms? This video about the ultimate hummingbird pool party will show you why.
Welcome to the pool
The video starts off with a view of a bubbling birdbath. Dozens of hummingbirds can be seen flitting about trying to get their turn in the water. We can only imagine how hot the day must be for the birds to be so calm in sharing the pool.
As the brief video goes on, several of the hummingbirds hop in and out of hte pool. They flit about and fly, while others hover nearby watching and waiting for space in the pool. Still others seem content with just minding their own business and cooling off on what might have been a hot summer day.
While the video plays, you can enjoy the rhythmic buzz of all those hummingbird wings flapping at once. It brings to mind the image of distant lawn mowers or the quiet roar of electric hedgeclippers. You might even be paying attention to the small splashes of water from the central fountain or whenever the hummingbirds land and take off. The video isn’t very long, but it’s definitely an unusually cool sight.
So where’s the charm
The video has earned over 130k likes, and some of those came from hummingbird fans and experts. Most of the comments shared are jokes about how packed pools can be during the hottest summer days. But others point out why this video is so unusual.
Despite being called charms, hummingbirds are not really the most sociable animals around. Hummingbird males won’t even stick around with their mates, leaving mothers to care for the children all on their own. In fact, hummingbirds are often seen chasing each other off from their territory. This is because the nectar that hummingbirds eat takes time to secrete from flowers and hummingbirds are not willing to share.
So why are these hummingbirds willing to share a pool? Maybe it’s just that hot a day or these hummingbirds are an unusually chill variety. Maybe the surrounding area resembles the tropics where hummingbirds are at their most relaxed. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t stop this video from being a cool and unusual peak at nature.
A hummingbird pool of your own
A lot of hummingbird lovers may be wondering how they can make their own hummingbird retreats. Because it would be really fun to have a large hummingbird sanctuary in your own backyard. But even a flowing birdbath like the one in the video might not be enough to attract one hummingbird, let alone 30. So what do you do?
Hummingbirds are some of the hungriest species of birds around. Most of their lives are spent on an endless hunt for food. Worst of all, if you aren’t careful, hummingbirds will suck flowers dry and leave to find another place to hunt.
But you can replace these natural food sources by planting the right plants and adding sugar water to your hummingbird feeders. If you’re interested in which flowers are best for hummingbirds, here’s a short list.
- Bee balm
- Cardinal flower
- Trumpet creeper
- Coral honeysuckle
So what do you think? Would you want a hummingbird pool party at your home?
