Cosmo had all but given up on ever finding a family. But then some kind-hearted people took him in and gave him a great life.
One day, a dog breeder in Nebraska went to a nearby shelter. She had decided to abandon a dog in her possession. He was a St. Bernard.
The breeder didn’t say why she was abandoning this dog. But it might have had something to do with the fact that he was huge, even for a St. Bernard. He weighed a whopping 130 pounds.
Naturally, the shelter volunteers did their best to make the dog feel happy. They named him Cosmo and hoped that he would find a home soon.
Eventually, a woman, Jayne, saw Cosmo online and decided that she needed to adopt him. So she booked a one-way plane ticket from New York. When she arrived, she rented a car, with the intention of driving Cosmo back home.
The shelter manager told Cosmo that she would miss him. But of course, she was happy to know that he was finally going into a permanent home.
So Jayne said hi to Cosmo for the first time. Soon, she was cuddling and kissing him. Clearly, the dog had found an affectionate owner!
But Cosmo soon got nervous. He didn’t want to go into the car that Jayne had rented. But eventually, Jayne and two other people got him into the back.
And then they made their journey home. Soon, Cosmo was going to meet Jayne’s husband, kids, two other dogs and giant rabbits.
One of Jayne’s other dogs, Poppy, gave Cosmo a very warm welcome. In fact, she just wanted to play with him right away.
Grendel, the other dog, also welcomed Cosmo. But he was more laid back than Poppy.
Then Jayne took Cosmo inside for the first time. For Cosmo, this was a strange new experience. He’d never been inside a home before.
Cosmo had decided to lay down in the kitchen for a while when Jayne’s children came up to him.
Jayne had been nervous about how Cosmo would react to kids.
But Cosmo was comfortable with them right away.
Over the next few days, Cosmo settled in. At first, he hadn’t really played back with Poppy.
But soon, he was wrestling with her enthusiastically. He was also leaping in and out of his owners’ car at will, accepting that they weren’t going to take him any place bad.
But there were a few things about home life that didn’t come easily to Cosmo.
For instance, Jayne would always give him plenty of bowls of water, but Cosmo would often opt to drink from the toilet. And the whole climbing stairs thing really confused him. So he spent his time downstairs. And when Jane came down in the mornings, he would get excited and snuggle her.
Then a video of Cosmo’s story appeared online. It soon went viral.
To date, it has gained almost 12 million views. It also has more than 208,000 likes and 11,800 comments. People have been saying things like this:
