Cancer is something no kid should have to endure. Unfortunately, the reality is that there are kids everywhere, every day, that are going through rigorous cancer treatments. After this 13-year-old boy survives his battle with cancer, a nonprofit decided to gift him a puppy, making his dreams come true.
After this young boy beats cancer, this nonprofit gifts him the puppy he’s been dreaming of.
Johnny Martin, is a 13-year-old boy from Chicago, Illinois. He was battling cancer in Lurie Children’s Hospital, undergoing intense treatments like chemotherapy. Every day, from his hospital window, he would watch dogs play. Soon, he developed dreams of having his own puppy one day.
Johnny would go on and on about having the Corgi of his dreams, he knew that was the type of dog he wanted. It became such a huge wish for Johnny, the hospital staff knew they had to do something.
The hospital staff contacted a nonprofit called the Little Wish Foundation. They told them about Johnny’s wish, hoping they would help.
Little Wish Foundation was started by Liz Niemiec, who was only 16-year-old when she started the nonprofit. After seeing a close friend battle kidney cancer, she decided to do something and started the foundation.
Liz’s friend, Max, lost his battle with cancer, ironically, his last wish was a puppy. She still remembers how happy the puppy made her friend, she immediately knew she had to fulfill little Johnny’s wish.
“Before Max passed away, his last wish was to get a puppy. I never forgot what a big difference and impact it made on his life.” Liz said as she remembered her friend.
When Johnny was finally well enough to leave the hospital, the staff had a special present waiting for him.
Liz and the Little Wish Foundation came through! When Johnny was finally released from the hospital, the staff was waiting outside with Liz, she was holding his dream Corgi. The precious puppy was only 8-weeks-old!
Johnny smiled from ear to ear when he started to realize what was happening, he reached his arms out to greet his new friend, who gave him some loving licks right from the start.
“I heard that you wanted a corgi. I think this is yours.” Said Liz, as she handed Johnny his new Corgi.
The 8-week old Corgi and Johnny had an instant connection. With a few more chemo sessions left, I’m sure his new puppy will help him through.
Thanks to the hospital staff, his social worker, and the Little Wish Foundation, Johnny is going home with his dream puppy and 100 percent cancer-free!
Johnny has been completely cancer-free for the past month but has a few more chemotherapy rounds just to be safe. The new puppy will definitely help Johnny stay positive, it might even help him heal faster!
