We all hope to live for a long time, but we rarely think about the implications of that wish. By the time we are close to reaching 100 years old, many of our loved ones have passed away. This was the case for one woman, who has already made it up to 102 years. When her cat died, she was devastated. Then, she found love again.
Iona L. was two years beyond her hundredth birthday when tragedy struck. Her cat, whom she had known for 10 years, passed away, leaving a big hole in Iona’s heart.
Her son saw how upset she was and immediately stepped in. He wanted to cheer his mother up again – it was too heartbreaking to see her in this state. He decided to bring her to a local animal shelter. This ingenious idea would allow her to have a new companion animal, and it would give a rescued pet a loving home. He found the best of both worlds.
The two headed over to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter. Iona had barely stepped into the cat area before she had found her new best friend. A white and gray cat named Edward made a beeline for her. It was love at first sight.
Edward headed straight for Iona, and the second he reached her he started rubbing up against her leg. It was as if they had been friends for years! The woman instantly knew that he was the one, so she adopted him and brought him home.
Iona’s son was to happy to see his mother find new love. He had watched joyfully as her face lit up when Edward approached her. He knew that the two were a match made in heaven.
Edward would not leave Iona’s side the entire time she was at the shelter. The employees were thrilled to see that this cat had finally found his forever home. When one asked to take a picture of this adorable duo, the woman jokingly replied, “Honey, I sure hope I don’t break your camera!”
Quite the opposite, this photo is just too cute. The lovable pair has captured the hearts of thousands, and Edward has completely renewed Iona’s energy.
“To me, an animal gives you life, that a person can’t, or material things can’t,” shared Barbara Bates, the animal shelter coordinator.
Due to Iona’s age, some people are concerned that Edward will not be in his new home for very long. Her son, however, has assured the shelter that “no matter what happens” the cat will stay in his family.
This was a happy ending for all involved. Edward and Iona each brought new love into their lives, and Iona’s son got to watch his mother’s smile return. No act of kindness is too small to be significant.
