It’s not every day that you see a 10-year-old boy spend his weekends reading stories to lonely shelter dogs.

Meet this lovely young boy named Evan B., he is just 10 years old but has already made a huge change not for himself but for the animals at ACC or Animal Care Centers.

Evan B. is not quite the other boys of his age. Currently living in the Bronx, Evan chooses to spend his weekends reading beautiful stories to shelter dogs at the Animal Care Centers of New York City.

Most of the boy his age would rather spend it in the malls, with friends, or just by playing mobile games, right? Evan

According to an interview with Buzzfeed, young Evan started this beautiful practice last August when he joined Animal Care Center’s Boroughbreds program.

“I always wanted to work with dogs and I was excited when she told me that I could read to them!” Evan told his interviewer.

What this boy does is truly amazing, a boy with a big heart who finds joy seeing dogs a little bit happy when he takes time to read to them. If you take time and see how he does it, you’ll feel his love and dedication to what he does.

Why does Evan do this?

Aside from his pure heart, we all know that no matter what good intentions the shelter has, it’s still not an ideal place for a dog. The smell, the limited space, the cages, the stress of other dogs, everything can take a toll and can cause severe stress to these poor souls.

A little help from a boy, from his heart to read them wonderful stories can help these dogs a lot! Plus, through social media, he tries his best to get these beautiful dogs adopted.

Even B. reads at Manhattan and Brooklyn shelters. His inspiration was from a post that he did when his mother found a poor dog that was tied up to a fence.

They took this poor dog in the shelter and their rescue tracked the dog. There he saw that he can volunteer and the rest is history.

“The most rewarding experience is when I try to specifically help an at-risk dog and I can almost immediately see the impact and how they react to me reading to them,” Evan B. cheerfully told his interviewer.

We totally agree! Each dog has their own story; each dog deserves a second chance.

“They start to get calm and quiet and some even fall asleep. They will be at the front of the kennel and end up curled up on their beds snoring. That makes me happy because I can tell they are scared and stressed. I sometimes bring toys for the dogs I read to as a reward for being listeners, but I end up giving toys to almost all of them!” Evan adds to his story.

Evan has a dream, to spread the knowledge that every dog needs a home and shelter dogs deserve a second chance – they all need love and acceptance.

Evan also has his own Instagram page named eb_and_the_pets which has more than 1k followers.

He ended his beautiful story with this line:

“I want my own rescue one day and hopefully by then New York will be a no-kill state.”

Until then, he’ll continue to help these dogs and together with his supportive mother, they will make a huge change for the lives of these beautiful dogs.
