Now, that is a headline you don’t read every day!
Zac Efron is mega famous now and has been ever since he starred in High School Musical back in 2007. His fame has only grown, ever since he proved he was more than just a teen actor.
For Zac, like many people in the world, one of his idols growing up was Michael Jackson. And the first time he ever spoke with the King of Pop, he made the man cry!
Somehow, Zac is only just telling this story now. While doing a press tour for The Greatest Showman, Zac was prompted to discuss the moment on The Graham Norton Show.
Both of the fellow guests and Zac’s co-stars, Zendaya and Hugh Jackman listened to the story with great interest.
Sadly, Zac didn’t actually meet Michael Jackson in person, but he did speak with MJ on the phone. Zac said he was in Paris, out to dinner with Kenny Ortega (director of HSM) when it all went down.
“His phone rang, I remember I got this look, like ‘you want to take this call.’ So I was like ‘okay’ and come over and I’m like ‘what’s up’ and he says ‘it’s Michael Jackson’ and I was like ‘WHAT?!’ And he hands me the phone.”
When they first spoke, it was pretty clear to Zac that Michael had no idea who he was and why Kenny put him on the phone. He was nice though and let Zac gush to him, then politely asked to speak to Kenny again.
For Zac, just speaking to Michael Jackson, even if he didn’t seem to know why they were talking, was incredible. But then things got even better.
Michael called back! And sure enough, Kenny put Zac back on the phone to speak to MJ. That is when things got interesting.
Apparently, Michael understood he’d made a mistake for brushing Zac off earlier and wanted to talk to him, as he was a big fan. Michael said to him:
“Oh, this is Zac from High School Musical? I love what you do. I’m a huge fan.”
The praise from his hero threw Zac for a loop and he was in tears instantly. He started to thank Michael for being his hero and told MJ that he was the reason that Zac did what he did for a living.
All of Zac’s kind words made Michael cry! After thanking MJ for teaching him how to dance and how to shine, MJ cried on the call, and then said to Zac:
“Hey Zac, isn’t it awesome? Dreams really do come true.”
