When Simon said those words to him, you could see his heart crush. But it was the words he followed up with that had the audience on their feet for this young man.

When 14-year-old Liam McNally appeared on Britain’s Got Talent and told the judges he was going to sing for them, they couldn’t help but roll their eyes. After all, pretty much everyone fancies themselves a singer these days. However, Liam was not deterred.

He explained to them that in five years, his goal was to be singing in big venues all around the world.

“I love singing so much. I wake up singing every day,” said Liam in the interview before his performance.

The only thing he had left to do was to prove to them he actually belonged up there on the stage. Liam knew the best way to get everyone’s attention was to sing a song that was completely out of the ordinary.

He decided to perform “Danny Boy”, a traditional Irish ballad that was written by Englishman Frederick Weatherly in 1913.

It is probably the last song you would ever expect someone from Generation Z to choose, but we imagine that was the point. As soon as Liam started singing, Simon Cowell immediately took notice. He cocked his head sideways in order to listen better and instantly became 100 times more alert.

The strength behind Liam’s voice is pretty unbelievable and just by looking at him you would never expect he would be able to sing with so much power. Yet, that is exactly what he did.

He hit notes that were so high that if the stage were made of glass it would have instantly shattered due to the intensity.

Then, during the next verse, Liam switched over to the complete opposite end of the spectrum.

He hit notes that were so low you could feel your body tremble.

His range is absolutely incredible and as the performance went on, one by one, the audience started clapping and cheering for him.

By the end, there was not a single person in the room that wasn’t on their feet and celebrating the beautiful moment.

“Well, I wouldn’t call you a good singer,” said Simon. “I wouldn’t. I would call you a fantastic singer!”

Everyone in the audience went completely crazy over the comment.

Piers Morgan was next to chime in.

“You’ve had no proper training? You practice in your room?” Piers asked the boy.

Liam confirmed as much. At the time of his performance, he had participated in zero formal training and largely just taught himself to sing by listening to music in his room. Piers was shocked.

“It’s probably too early to say this, but you are a serious contender to win Britain’s Got Talent,” said Piers.

Amanda Holden agreed and mentioned that Liam’s parents must have been so proud.

Everyone was so impressed, and to no one’s surprise, the performance resulted in a unanimous ‘yes’ from all three judges.

While Liam ultimately didn’t win that year’s season of Britain’s Got Talent, he did make it all the way to the finals where he once again performed his show-stopping rendition of “Danny Boy” for the world. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to clinch him the victory, but we have to say, he is certainly one of the most talented 14-year-old we have ever seen!

If it was up to us, we would have given him a record deal right there on the spot. At the very least though, we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be seeing of this up-and-coming young talent.
