Can you imagine going to another country where you don’t speak the language and singing a duet with a pop star — all at the age of 10?
That’s exactly what happened to Celine Tam. She traveled with her family from Hong Kong to Germany to sing with pop music star Helene Fischer. The duet of You Raise Me Up not only had many members of the audience in tears but also on their feet in a standing ovation before the song even ended.
Fischer, with her long blonde hair and glittery white jumpsuit, looked every inch the superstar.
But it was clear that she thought someone else was the real star of the show.
“We are looking for young people every year for this show,” said Fischer. “We are looking for young talents around the world. And I can tell you one thing: this year we landed a real hit. I would now like to introduce you to a sugar-sweet girl. She is 10 years old and came directly from Hong Kong to us in Germany. I welcome to the stage: Celine Tam.”
As Celine took to the stage, the audience couldn’t help but aww over her.
In her patent leather shoes and her black tutu, she was just too sweet — every inch the “sweet mouse,” as Fischer described her.
Celine shared that she had touched snow for the first time that day, something she’d never seen before.
She also shared that her parents were pretty big fans of another famous singer.
Her name was Celine, and her baby sister, sitting in the audience, was Dion.
“You have really impressed me with your voice,” said Fischer. “I’m no Celine Dion, but would you still sing with me tonight?”
Fischer and Celine had chosen to sing You Raise Me Up together.
It’s a famous song known throughout the world, having been covered by many singers including Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, and even Celine Dion herself.
“It’s a beautiful song that I honestly get goosebumps from, and probably more because I’m allowed to sing with this lovely young lady,” said Fischer.
Before Fischer began to sing, she blew Celine a kiss, which the adorable little girl returned.
But once the 10-year-old started to sing, the audience’s jaws dropped. They were touched by her sweet demeanor when she came on the stage, but it was her powerful voice — mature beyond her age — that blew them away.
Many of them were seen wiping tears away as Fischer and Celine sang together in two-part harmony, touched by the beauty of the music. And then, as the two singers reached the final chorus, the audience surged to its feet, applauding wildly. They couldn’t even wait for the end of the song to give their standing ovation.
Celine also gained attention for her auditions on Season 12 of “America’s Got Talent,” where she earned a Golden Buzzer from Judge Laverne Cox.
She advanced to the semifinal round but did not receive enough votes to move on to the finale. Regardless, it’s not enough to say we’ll see great things from Celine Tam — we’re seeing them already!
