Movies transport viewers from their boring, stressful lives into the intimate realities of onscreen characters. But for that to happen, the actors have to be truly exceptional and talented.
But that doesn’t always happen. The names on this list are famous ones, but that doesn’t mean they were amazing onscreen.
Chuck Norris
He caused a torrent of jokes in early 2005, but they were not praising his acting.
Norris is a black belt and top class in judo and Brazilian jiu jitsu but starring in lots of action movies with an abundance of fight scenes, could not cover his not-so-first-class acting.
Rotten Tomatoes says he is the worst actor of all time, with movies averaging a rating of 18.4.
Some examples are “Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection”, “Firewalker”, and “Hero and the Terror”.
Ruby Rose
When a character is replaced with a new actress and character after just one season, it does not say much about their acting abilities.
Rose may have decided to leave “Batwoman” and kill off Kate Kane.
Or maybe producers did not want to waste money and so asked Ryan Wilder instead. But fans are asking, ‘What happened to Kate Kane’.
The answer must be the reviews.
Scoring 3.4/10 on “IMDB” and 23% on “Rotten Tomatoes” with audiences is not exactly high praise.
Rose’s thriller “Vanquish” scored even lower. Just 5% with “Rotten Tomatoes” critics.
Tom Green
With movie titles like “Freddy Got Fingered”, “Total Frat Movie”, and “Grind”, it’s not easy expecting something amazing from Tom Green.
He is an actor who has failed to deliver even with minor roles. Few films star him as their lead and people see why.
When Green is the lead, like in “Freddy Got Fingered”, it earns 4.6 on “IMBD”.
He also got the Golden Raspberry for worst actor in 2001 with “Freddy Got Fingered”.
At least he showed good sportsmanship and went to get his Golden Razzie.
Lindsay Lohan
We all have a soft spot for Lohan thanks to “Mean Girls”.
But her subsequent performances have been below par. In her late noughties, she tried to revive her acting career after a controversial private life.
Lohan’s career revival did not occur the way she wanted.
Films like “Georgia Rule” were not nominated for Razzies, but they got poor reviews.
And then there was “I Know Who Killed Me” where Lohan took home two Razzies for her incredible performances.
Sharon Stone
Stone distracted audiences from her acting by crossing and uncrossing her legs, but it was obvious that leg-crossing is one of her only talents, or her only talent.
“Basic Instinct” may have escaped the critic’s negative remarks but that’s where it ends.
In later films like “The Specialist” and “Intersection”, she took home two Golden Raspberry awards for Worst Actress.
A decade later in 2004, Stone earned her first Stinker award for Worst Supporting Actress in “Catwoman”.
David Hasselhoff
“Baywatch” put Hasselhoff on the map, but it did not mean he was good in acting.
He has been regularly voted the worst actor, named the 49th worst actor by IMBD.
Apart from the original “Knight Rider”, Hasselhoff has starred in a few films that have scored over 6/10 on IMDB.
The “Sharknado” franchise has become a cult classic for being bad, so fans wonder at Hasselhoff talent’s if he takes on the role of Colonel Gilbert Shepard for the fourth installment “Of Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens”.
Sofia Coppola
The “Godfather” franchise was flawless but when the third one was released, it just did not live up to the first two and the whole franchise was tainted.
What happened, you ask? Nepotism.
Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter Sofia was given the role of Mary Corleone.
Her deliveries were both flat and overacted at the same time.
It was hard to take her seriously. Good thing she realized she was not made for acting, focusing behind the camera instead.
Josh Hartnett
Hartnett was the crush of younger female audiences in the late 1990s and 2000s, but his acting abilities aren’t exactly impressive.
And it’s not like he’s not been given his big break. “Sin City” and Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor” were box office hits, but he failed to make a lasting impression.
Productions where Harnett is the lead garnered low scores with both his audiences and critics.
The TV series “Valley of the Gods” achieved a disappointing 4.6/10 on IMDB.
Taylor Lautner
There were those who defended Lautner after his poor performance in the “Twilight” franchise, saying the books were poor source material for the saga and not his acting.
Then the action “Tracers” and the family-drama “Run the Tide” came out, and Lautner still struggled to receive positive ratings.
“Run the Tide” scored 9% and “Tracers” 23% with “Rotten Tomatoes” critics.
This proved that it is not the genre, nor the source material, but the actor’s acting talents if any.
Elizabeth Berkley
Sometimes, one bad performance can ruin a career. For Berkley, it was her frantic, overacted, and over-the-top performance in Paul Verhoeven’s “Showgirls”.
Verhoeven’s films are not exactly known for demanding roles or emotional storylines, but Berkeley failed to make a name for herself after this one.
She wanted more serious roles after starring in the teen series “Saved by the Bell”, but her big break had her winning the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress.
Steven Seagal
Action movies don’t really ask for emotional output or the finest acting skills.
But Seagal’s movies still receive poor reviews. “Half Past Dead” scored 37% and “On Deadly Ground” 34% with “Rotten Tomatoes” audiences.
The critics were not so kind to the martial arts actor. The 2002-action got a shocking 3% while the 1994-production a measly 12% with the website’s critics.
Seagal has been nominated three times for a Golden Raspberry, and has yet to add a Razzie to his collection.
Kirk Cameron
Cameron is not a household name and there may be a reason why. His films don’t bring in favorable reviews.
“Left Behind II: Tribulation Force” scored 4.8/10 and “Extraordinary” 3.4 on “IMDB”.
But it was one really bad performance that put him in the spotlight, namely, “Saving Christmas”.
The film scored a dismal 1.3/10 on “IMDB”.
So Cameron picked up the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actor thanks to his mismatched and inappropriate acting for the Christmas film.
Rob Schneider
He’s had a successful career with more than 30 years in showbiz, but Schneider is one of the worst actors.
His films are lighthearted and not exactly asking for displays of great emotion, but Schneider has made slapstick comedies a little to bland.
“The Animal” scored 4.8/10 on “IMDB” and 30% with audiences on “Rotten Tomatoes”.
“Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo” did have average ratings but the sequel “Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo” ruined it all for him.
Drew Barrymore
Many are surprised but Barrymore is not one of Hollywood’s finest actresses.
She has had a long career in film, starting in 1982 with “E.T”.
But that was more of a product of nepotism than talent, as director Steven Spielberg is her godfather.
Barrymore’s role in “Never Been Kissed” drew criticism, but it is that film which earned her two Golden Raspberry nominations.
Nor was it “Poison Ivy” or “Duplex” though both films are rated poorly by audiences and critics.
Hilary Duff
“Disney” is a well-respected production house who paved the way for many talented stars.
And they may have iconic teen figures who are famous, but when those stars try to make it big on their own, “Disney” must have their blinkers on the whole time.
Hilary Duff’s music and TV career were thanks to Disney.
When she broke off to star in movies like “Material Girls”, Duff only managed to add Golden Raspberry nominations to her credentials.
Angelina Jolie
It may be disappointing to see Angelina Jolie on the list, but though she starred in box-office hits like “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Maleficent” the actress does not manage more than a few facial expressions, making her films a bit lacking.
Her much-anticipated “The Tourist” brought in unfavorable reviews – 21% with the critics and 42% with the audiences on “Rotten Tomatoes” – despite starring alongside Johnny Depp.
Many will defend Jolie, but she is one of five actresses to receive four Golden Raspberry nominations.
Owen Wilson
Some actors have careers spanning decades, like Owen Wilson here.
He is not exactly a bad actor. The problem is he doesn’t really act.
Wilson’s mannerisms, way of talking, and personality are simply Owen Wilson’s.
He is the same guy in “Wedding Crashers”, “Zoolander”, and “You, Me, and Dupree”.
Lucky for him his on-screen persona is a likable guy and that makes him escape any Razzie nominations and just bring in mediocre ratings.
Katie Holmes
“Batman Begins” could not save Holmes from being labeled as one of the worst actresses.
Nolan wanted her to return for the sequel, but viewers breathed a sigh of relief when the actress did not.
Holmes starred in “Mad Money” which scored 5.8/10 and “The Romantics” which scored 5.0/10 on “IMDB”.
Her recent films like “Alone Together” scored 5.2/10 on “IMBD” while “Brahms: The Boy II Liza” and “The Secret: Dare to Dream” resulted in Razzie nominations.
Tara Reid
Things were looking up for Reid in the early 2000s thanks to the first two installments of the “American Pie” franchise, plus her role on the sitcom “Scrubs”.
But then “Incubus” and “Unnatural Causes” happened, so Reid’s career sank.
Her failure to make a name for herself could be due to Reid accepting every film, even “Sharknado”.
The actress did not learn even after accepting the first one.
There are five TV films for the “Sharknado” franchise and she has taken the lead female role in every one.
Tyler Perry
Tyler Perry has built a name for himself. Many actors rely on talent and natural ability, but Perry depended on other things to succeed in the entertainment industry.
Sheer hard work and dedication to his craft.
While Perry’s “Medea” franchise has an incredible 11 films, he has received two Golden Raspberry nominations for Worst Actress (in drag), plus a Golden Raspberry nomination for Worst Actor for “Alex Cross” and “Good Deeds.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Playing Mr. Freeze in “Batman & Robin” has gone down as one of the worst performances in history.
The movie itself was questionable and had probably impacted Chris O’Donnell’s entire career.
But when it comes to Schwarzenegger, it’s not just “Batman & Robin”.
He has received two Golden Raspberry nominations for “Conan the Barbarian” and “Last Action Hero”.
The actor got two more with his roles in “End of Days” and “The Sixth Day”.
Jennifer Love Hewitt
She’s in the TV series “The Client List”, but Jennifer Love Hewitt has never been in a movie that has gotten even mediocre reviews from “Rotten Tomatoes” audiences.
Even films she’s starred in have not scored highly.
“I Know What You Did Last Night” scraped 44% with critics and 40% with audiences.
Then its sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” got 29% from audiences and 7% from critics.
As for “The Client List”, the TV series only scored 6.5/10 on “IMBD”.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Shakespeare in Love”, but that does not remove the fact that she is in one of the worst actresses.
A singular bad performance in “Mortdecai” got her a Golden Raspberry nomination in 2015.
There was also the 2010 romance-drama “Country Strong” and the 2007 comedy-drama “The Good Night”.
Both flopped on “Rotten Tomatoes”.
There have been some movies that received favorable reviews, like the “Avengers” franchise, but those are the ones where she’s not in the lead.
Nicolas Cage
There are those who will stand by Cage and defend him as a legendary actor.
Movies such as David Lynch’s “Wild at Heart” and the classic “Leaving Las Vegas” required Cage to play crazy, which he is good at, but that’s about it.
From 2006 to 2015, he received 5 Razzie nominations as Worst Actor for films such as “Season of the Witch” and, probably Cage’s worst to date, “The Wicker Man”.
Shaquille O’Neal
Shaquille O’Neal is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, but his talents don’t transfer to the world of film.
He is in position 24 for the worst actor of all time on “IMDB”.
One of his first roles, John Henry Irons in the 1997 production “Steel”, should have been clear that he was not made for acting.
On “Rotten Tomatoes”, his film scored a dismal 12% with critics and 19% with audiences.
Adam Sandler
Sandler has pulled off one of the biggest acting feats.
His roles as Jill Sadelstein and Jack Sadelstein in “Jack and Jill”, had him take home the Razzie for the Worst Actress and Worst Actor.
Sandler also made up the cast of “Jack and Jill” , scooping up the most Razzies in film history.
The actor is in second place for the most Golden Raspberry nominations, with 12 in total.
These include “Little Nicky”, “Hubie Halloween”, and “Blended”.
David Caruso
Caruso’s Lieutenant Horatio ‘H’ Caine on “CSI: Miami” is unforgettable. His over-the-top and trying-to-hard-to-be-cool mannerisms in “CSI: Miami” became memes and jokes on the internet.
And it got worse for the actor.
Roles include “Jade” which scored 13% with critics and 28% with audiences on “Rotten Tomatoes”.
There was even “Proof of Life” which wasn’t so bad but still disappointed critics and audiences, though it starred Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe.
Katherine Heigl
Since “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Knocked Up”, Heigl has failed to convince fans of her acting talents.
After “Grey’s Anatomy”, she was in “Killers”, “Home Sweet Hell’, and “One for the Money”.
None of these racked up anything above a 6/10 on “IMDB”.
Heigl wasn’t on Hollywood’s radar, but the Golden Raspberries were paying attention to her.
In total, she’s won three nominations for Worst Actress, in roles in “Unforgettable”, “One for the Money” and “Home Sweet Hell”.
Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson was never cast in a movie for her acting abilities, and everyone knows it.
TV show “Baywatch” and the film “Barb Wire” listed several of her more important attributes, while “Barb Wire”, as the film’s lead, received pretty poor reviews.
On “IMDB”, the film got an overall 3.4/10 and “Rotten Tomatoes” audiences were harsher, giving it 14%
That led to Anderson picking up a Razzie nomination that year.
Alicia Silverstone
Things were looking up for Silverstone in the early to mid-1990s.
She managed to give viewers mediocre lead performances in “Clueless” and “The Crush, which received fair ratings, but were not that generous.
But after those films, the reviews have just gotten poorer and poorer for Silverstone.
Recent productions like “Sister of the Groom” (2020) scored 4.6/10 and “Last Survivors” (2021) 4.8/10 on “IMBD”.
“Clueless” may be a teen classic but Silverstone did not display much emotional range in it.
And since then, the actress has failed to deliver unique and captivating performances for viewers.
