We live in a world where women have to be on their toes at all times. It’s an unfortunately sad reality. Therefore, it’s vital that every woman has the skills to protect herself from a violent attack.

It’s pretty common knowledge that women are often the victims of physical violence. Most of these attacks are by men with the goal of sexually assaulting their victims. In fact, from a survey in 2018 by Growth from Knowledge, 81% of women reported being either sexually harassed or assaulted in their lifetime.

This figure should be unsettling and compel society to act. One of the things that can be done is providing women with the tools and knowledge to protect themselves in case they are ever found in a life-threatening situation with an attacker.

YouTube vlogger, Aja Dang, shared a video to her 424,000 followers showcasing self-defense moves for women. The video has over 2 million views. Those numbers make it pretty clear that women want to know how to protect themselves.

In the video, Dang works with Rener Gracie from Gracie University in Torrance, California.

Gracie has over 25 years of jiu-jitsu training. Gracie University is an online martial arts learning center where students have the opportunity to learn jiu-jitsu from their homes. In addition, they have various locations around the world as well.

The first move they go over is the “two-handed front choke.” This is one of the most common situations that women find themselves in – where the attack is choking the victim while facing them.

Here, Gracie recommends stepping back with one foot, bowing down into the attacker’s thumbs, and ducking out. It’s important to tighten up your neck for this move and to slide under the attack’s wrists.

“You want that triple-chin,” Gracie says.

The next situation is when the attacker sneaks up from behind and chokes their victim with their arm. For this, the victim steps one leg forward and the other steps in between the attacker and victim. It’s important to dip your shoulder during the turn.

By the end of the move, you’ll be facing your victim and can push them away and run.

Next, is when the victim is against the wall and the attacker is choking them with one hand. If the attacker is choking you with their right hand, pivot your right foot in while striking their hand away with your right hand.

The striking motion is called the “palm strike.” Ideally, the attacker will stumble forward where the victim can wrap their arm around the attacker’s head resulting in a headlock.

The fourth situation takes place on the floor where the attacker is choking the victim while on top of them. To break free, tuck your elbows into your sides and grab their wrist in what is called a “monkey grip” (no thumbs). Then, use your opposite hand and place it on their tricep so they can’t slip out.

To end, place one foot just outside of theirs and place your other foot in the center of theirs. Next, use your hips to lift them off of you while rolling over.

The last move is when the attacker is in between the victim’s legs while on the floor. Essentially, this is a complex move that ends with the victim being able to break their attacker’s arm. Serious stuff!
