Diner spots couple’s matching tattoos she can’t ignore

June 11th, 2021

It’s not often that you see something worth talking about when you’re out for lunch – but occasionally, something small might catch your eye.

When Michelle Torino-Barcelos was having a late lunch with her husband at late lunch at McAlister’s Deli, she saw a young man sitting close by, waiting for his food.

The man had several tattoos, but it was the words on his left arm that caught Michelle’s attention.

She noticed that “Together we serve” had been inked onto his arm – and Michelle wondered about its significance.

Were the words referring to his faith? Or was this about serving his country? And what about “we”? As Michelle pointed out:

“The word ‘we’ may mean as we, as a whole serving God, or ‘we’ can also mean him, together with his other half; it can be his girlfriend or his wife.”

Not long after, a young woman entered the deli and sat down at the table across from the young man.

Michelle realized something special: this woman had the exact same words inked across her left arm.

Getting any tattoo is a pretty big deal, and a good majority of the population would still shake their heads at the idea of doing anything so permanent.

That’s why tattoos tend to be significant, a marker of something particularly unique or special, or to commemorate something important.

This couple’s matching tattoo is even more special because it’s clearly something they’re both incredibly passionate about.

But what exactly is “it”? Was Michelle right to presume that the tattoos were religious?

It didn’t take long for the answer to be revealed when, to Michelle’s delight, the couple held hands and bowed their heads, saying a quick prayer before they ate.

At this, Michelle wrote that she was “blown away”, explaining:

“Not only by seeing how sweet they were but by just simply being bold enough in professing their faith in public. And for me, that is really what a relationship goal must be!”

It’s true – for many youngsters, faith simply isn’t “trendy”. But this devoted couple understood something simple: religion is timeless; something you carry with you from the moment you are born.

The couple had such an impact on Michelle that she knew she couldn’t leave without saying something.

So she approached their table and told the youngsters that she felt “blessed and inspired by just looking at them, their tattoo, and their faith and love for God”.

As it turned out, the couple was newly married, and both wife and husband were working for the army – so now their tattoos had double the significance.

For Michelle, this sweetened the encounter even more. She wrote:

“In my heart, not only that they want to serve the country together, they also want to serve God together, and that is what their tattoo really means. And that is the best #RelationshipGoal ever!”

It certainly is – and if you’re going to get a matching tattoo, it’s wise to get one like this.

Not all relationships last forever, and that’s okay. But one thing that is eternal is God’s love. A tattoo commemorating your shared devotion for God will never lose significance, even if you part ways with whoever shares your tattoo.
