Believe it or not, there not all aspects are positive when it comes to living in a tiny home. I know it sounds crazy since it’s a trend that’s convinced a lot of people to downsize and embrace simplicity.
So, before you sell all your things – take a peek at some of the most unfavorable parts about tiny houses that really kinda “stink.” It’s always good to have as much information as possible before you make a big leap.
What’s not to love about the benefits of living in a tiny house? With lower bills, less stuff, and more mobility – surely it would lead to a peaceful existence. However, not everyone talks about the downsides of this type of lifestyle.
Jenna Spesard from Tiny House Giant Journey knows from experience what it’s like to own one (hers is only 165 sq ft). She’s here to spill all the dirty details that you may have never heard or considered.
They Get Filthy Quick
Sure, cleaning a tiny home is a breeze that would take practically no time to complete. But according to Jenna, with limited space, they’re easy to get dirty too.
Because you don’t have an entryway to use for wiping off (like on rainy days) – the outside comes straight into your living space. Or, can you imagine adding in a dog? Jenna says she’s “constantly cleaning.”
The Composting Toilet
Not everyone with a tiny house owns a composting toilet (phewww), but Jenna does. While there are lots of benefits to them, they also take some getting used to.
If you invite over house guests – just be prepared to have an uncomfortable conversation in regards to “using the bathroom.”
It’s Difficult To Make Your Bed
A lot of us like having a nicely made bed to crawl into every night. You can still have one – it’s just a lot harder to do with less space! Jenna compares it to doing “acrobatics,” especially when you’re making it from scratch.
They Can Get Smelly
This isn’t even about the toilet Jenna explains. It’s all the smells of daily life like from cooking, garbage, pets, or perfume. In such small quarters, they can easily get on your clothes. Also, there’s really no way to escape them in 165 square feet.
Limited Room For Guests
If you’re a fan of throwing dinner parties, you might not like living in a tiny house. You can maybe fit a few people tightly on your couch, but that’s about it. Sleepovers might be a little uncomfortable too.
Say Goodbye To Closet Space
A lot of us like to have a wide variety of outfits to choose from. But in a really tiny house, you better be prepared to pick only your favorites.
Jenna shows us what her closet looks like, and frankly, there’s not much room at all. She explains how if there comes a time when she has to get a bridesmaid dress or a special event outfit, there’s just no way to store it afterwards. That does really stink!
People Will Judge You
No matter how much it’s YOUR decision what kind of home you own, a lot of people are judgmental about tiny-living. Jenna says:
“Some of you are judging me right now. Don’t lie, you’re doing it.”
She’s learned to put up with it though, because after all, “we’re not all the same.” However, if you’re going to start downsizing just grow some thick skin as well.
If these downsides haven’t been convincing enough, watch the video below to hear Jenna talk about them first-hand. She has a few more to let you know about too!
So, are you thinking of hopping on the tiny house train like Jenna, or do you prefer a bigger home?
