Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” was the perfect choice for the grand reveal in Emily Bland’s audition on America’s Got Talent (AGT).
Emily, a hotel front desk clerk from Arkansas, came to the show to sing, not to be funny, although she turned out to be hilarious after a brief exchange with the judges.
When Simon asked her about the worst guest she’s ever had, she quipped,
“Okay, I don’t want to throw my mom under the bus… her name is Karen.”
The audience and judges were already charmed.
At 29, Emily has an incredible voice, something you have to hear to believe.
She expressed her love for Garth Brooks, but no one expected her to sing like a male country singer.
Even the judges, who are used to unique performances, were unprepared for what came next.
Emily started singing in a bewildering baritone, leaving jaws dropping in the audience and among the judges.
One viewer captured the collective surprise perfectly:
“At first I was like, that’s definitely not her voice. A few seconds later I was like, dang, is that really her voice? ”
Emily’s rendition of Josh Turner’s “Your Man” left everyone in disbelief.
As Emily finished, Sofia Vergara blurted out, “That’s not you!”
True enough, a man emerged from the back, joining Emily on stage and introducing himself as her husband.
“That was me singing,” the man with the cowboy hat confirmed.
Howie Mandel, quick on his feet, joked, “So you’re a ventriloquist and your wife is your puppet.”
Emily shook her head while her husband nodded, attempting to put his hand around her.
Howie’s quick-witted warning, “Not to put his hand in her,” had everyone laughing.
Simon Cowell expressed a bit of disappointment, saying,
“I’m slightly disappointed, because I thought that was her singing.”
Sofia admitted, “I don’t even know how to judge this thing.”
The surprise and confusion were clear, but Emily was not done showcasing her talent.
She demonstrated her ventriloquism skills with Simon, making him say, “You are so much better looking in real life.”
Emily then performed the same trick with Sofia Vergara, and even more impressively, with Heidi Klum speaking in German.
Her ability to mimic different voices, including a challenging language like German, was astonishing.
One viewer commented,
“I’ve never seen anything like that before but they both had me intrigued and I want to see more of them for some crazy reason, they could actually go a long way on the show, kind of like the underdogs of AGT, something different.”
The act received mixed but mostly positive reactions from the judges.
Howie, Heidi, and Sofia gave her a resounding yes, while Simon, still processing the performance, marked his vote with a question mark.
The ambiguity of his response highlighted the uniqueness of Emily’s act.
Despite the initial confusion, Emily’s performance left a lasting impression.
Her blend of humor, ventriloquism, and vocal talent created an unforgettable moment on AGT.
