Thanks to a DNA test kit, a woman from Los Banos, California, has been reunited with her long lost child, whom she thought dead for almost three decades. Here’s their beautiful, touching story.
A few years ago, back in 2017, Tina Bejarano of Los Banos was convinced by her daughter to take a DNA test, and so she did. After a while, she received an email that read: “I think we need to talk, it says we’re related, and it says you’re my mom”. The email was sent by a man living in New Jersey and Bejarano couldn’t believe her eyes.
Bejarano says she grew up estranged from her family, brought up by her step-father and an abusive mother. When Tina got pregnant at the age of 17, her mother immediately told her that she was not allowed to keep the baby. Then when her daughter was born her mother informed her that the baby died 15 minutes after birth.
“The next day, she comes back to tell me, ‘The baby died 15 minutes after it was born. It never made it. It was sick.”
A few months after giving birth, Bejarano started dating Eric Gardere and they got married soon after that. Even though they now have five children together, they have been celebrating the day that lost child was born all these years. For both of them, this was a day of mourning and they even admit that Bejarano would get depressed for weeks during that time. But, apparently, all that was for no reason. Because that baby they thought Bejarano thought she’d lost was born healthy and was adopted five days later by a loving family.
Kristin, Bejarano’s child, transitioned to a man and now has a wife and a baby of his own. They have been in touch since they found out they are mother and child and even Gardere says that he feels like Kristin is his own son.
“We’ve been communicating with Kristen for a few months now. He calls me Dad, I call him Son, I text him every morning.”
Bejarano says she doesn’t care whether he is a son or a daughter, she doesn’t care if he’s transitioned or not. She’s just happy she has found her child for whom she’s mourned all these years and who she never ceased to love, although she never got to meet him.
The family is going to meet up soon, November 24th. Kristin and his family are going to Los Banos to meet Kristin’s biological mother and they’ll be staying for four days. The whole family are excited about the upcoming reunion.
This beautiful story is to prove that science can do wonders today through DNA identification. Just like this family got reunited with the assistance of DNA testing, the latter has been used to identify criminals in several cold case criminal investigations and justice has been served. Like the case of Nickey Duane Stane, who will be tried after being arrested for a murder and series of sexual assaults that happened between 1996 and 2002.
