Many of us have been in a situation where we’ve gone out to dinner at a restaurant and by the time we are ready to leave we’ve had one too many to drive home. Luckily, we now have apps such as Uber and Lyft in order to get us home safely, however, on these occasions, it can be fearful to leave your car overnight in certain places. When leaving your car overnight at an unknown place it can be nerve-racking because we don’t know what will come the next day. Possibilities include discovering a ticket, a boot, or even no car at all because it got towed.

However, the quote that “it is better to be safe than sorry” remains true every time. This is proven once more by a woman in Sherwood Park, Alberta. One night Paula Grzelak-Schultz went out to dinner to Original Joes with her husband. Once they finished dinner they decided to be safe and avoid drinking and driving by ordering an uber home.

The next morning Paula had to return to Original Joes to retrieve her car. To her surprise, she did not find a boot, or a ticket but a sweet note on her windshield from the restaurant managing partner.

The note reads,

Dear Original Joe’s Sherwood Park Guest,

Just wanted to thank you for leaving your car parked overnight. I’m not sure if you had consumed alcohol at our restaurant or not, but we wanted to thank you for not drinking and driving. Enclosed is a voucher good for 1lb of our delicious chicken wings. Please accept this as a thank you for being responsible. Life is valuable, have a great weekend.”

Truly something so heartwarming to return to the next morning after making a responsible decision rather than a boot, ticket, or worst-case scenario no car. What is even better is that Paula came back to a nice note and a voucher for one pound of chicken wings! Now she can come back for another night out with her husband or bring anyone she wants to celebrate making the right decision.

Jay McLean who is the managing partner started leaving notes on people’s windshields in an effort to encourage people to not drink and drive, as well as, thank them for making the responsible and safe decision for themselves and others.

Paula has since shared this note on her personal Facebook page to share the kindness and appreciation to the restaurant. Easy to see why it went viral with over 20,000 likes and 8,000 shares. People all over the world are appreciating the simple kindness and acting responsibly.

Sometimes it can be a difficult decision to leave our cars behind in unknown places overnight but it is experiences such as this one that are shared that reminds us of two important things. The first being it is always better to drive responsibly and be safe for yourself and those around you. As well as, just how important and powerful a simple kindness and thank you can be.
