Traveling can be expensive. By the time you book a flight, rent a vehicle, find a hotel room, schedule your route, book the local must-see’s, find great restaurants and bring home a souvenir or two, trips can easily be well into the hundreds if not thousands of dollars range. All-inclusive vacations are a great way to help take some of the stress out of planning every detail, but you still have to get yourself to your destination, usually requiring a flight. But when you are going to be checking luggage, make sure you weigh your bag before you get to the airport, otherwise, you will be doing what this woman did to avoid paying an extra fee.
The woman had booked an all-inclusive location, so she wasn’t planning on bringing extra cash.
Natalie Wynn was going on a vacation whose features included all of her food and drinks as well as her travel and accommodations, so he had not planned on bringing extra money along with her.
She told People magazine, “Because I had booked an all-inclusive holiday so was getting all my food and drink, I didn’t plan on bringing much money with me,” she said. “I think I only had about €69 ($84) in my account just to bring with me on holiday.”
But when she got to the baggage area, she ran into some trouble.
The airline told her her luggage was overweight, so she got creative.
Her suitcase was about 9lbs over the weight limit, bumping her up into the next size bracket which was an additional $85 fee but she refused to pay it.
“I literally said, ‘I’m not paying it’, and started putting my clothes on,” Natalie told the airline.
And she did. She boarded the plane wearing all 9lbs of her overweight clothing including a cardigan, two pairs of shoes, seven dresses, two pairs of shorts, and a skirt. She was very warm on the plan with so many layers on, saying at one point she felt faint and was “absolutely boiling”.
Look into the luggage regulations before your next flight.
The airline got a kick out of Natalie’s ingenious solution. They were impressed by her creativity and quick thinking.
In an interview with People, the airline said, “Natalie’s ingenuity here is noted! The good news for Natalie and the rest of our customers, is that later this month we are increasing our hand baggage allowance to 8kg. This will hopefully help her travel a little less like Joey from Friends next time.”
Every airline is different and they all have unique guidelines and specifications for what is considered a carry-on or checked luggage. You can find the information on their websites, but it is best to check into this before you begin packing. What a hassle to get the airport and find out had you left a few things behind, it could have saved you quite a chunk of change.
But when all else fails, sometimes you just have to get creative and think of other solutions – just like this woman.
Happy travels!
