We all remember our favorite teachers from back in the day, especially the good ones. Good teachers have a way of making an impression on us that can last for a lifetime. However, it turns out, it also works the other way as well.
One kindergarten teacher, Lorly Schik, just couldn’t get a certain student out of her mind.
Then, 30 years later when she randomly happened to see the boy on TV, she did what any thoughtful teacher would do. Schik decided to send the child’s parents a letter out of the blue to tell them how proud she was of him.
“When I first saw him, I could hardly believe it,” wrote Schik. “I can still picture him as a small dark-haired child in his K-desk!”
Although, now, of course, the student named Cory was much, much older.
He even had some grey hairs starting to show, according to the story from USA Today.
Since their time in class together so many years ago, Cory had gone on to become a popular newscaster on the KARE 11 network.
When Schik happened to see Cory’s smiling face looking back at her on the television one day, a whole host of memories came flooding back.
She recalled all of the great moments of having Cory as a student and that’s when she knew she had to pen the letter.
“Hi Diane & Terry,” she wrote. “It is with a great deal of pride that I am now watching my former Kindergarten student telecast the news on KARE 11.”
Seeing Cory on the news caused her to feel so many warm emotions, and she took pride in the fact that the child had been able to accomplish so much over the years.
Schik also told the family a little about her life currently.
“In September 20, 2013 I moved to an Independent Senior Living Complex in St. Paul. It was a very difficult decision, a part of my heart will always be in Perham. My children and grand (& great) children are all in the Twin Cities. The time had come!”
Then, she asked them to please greet Cory for her.
Her thoughtful little letter is so heartwarming to read.
“Greet Cory. Tell him his K-teacher is now 90 years old, enjoys seeing his newscast, and wishes him (and you, too) the VERY BEST!
-Mrs. Schik.”
Schik expected the correspondence to end there. However, she was so surprised when she actually received another letter back from Cory a few weeks later.
Cory was very grateful for his former teacher’s note and decided to send her a letter of his own thanking her.
“I just had to tell Mrs. Schik how much her note meant to me. And, really, how much she meant to me,” said Cory.
At the end, he also included a very beautiful question that made Schik very happy — “Do you want to meet?” Cory wrote.
Her answer? “Of course!” she said.
Their whole reunion was captured on video by USA Today, and it’s something you just have to watch.
It is such a beautiful moment.
Really, it’s safe to say that the impacts good teachers and students can have on one another is nothing short of amazing. This story proves that it is never too late to get in touch and check up on each other either. You might be pleasantly surprised by the responses that you get.
