While it’s by no means his most dramatic makeover, Christopher Hopkins – also known as “The Makeover Guy” – pulled off an extraordinary transformation for a woman trying to grow out her grey hair.
Hopkins, who works out of his Minneapolis salon, is a master of transformations, especially for those needing to get out of a rut. He also wrote a book titled Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45, which includes step-by-step guidelines on how to create your own method for looking your best every day.
His services start at $200 and if you want to see what he’s capable of, there’s a whole YouTube channel devoted to his before-and-afters.
In a video watched by over 400,000 people, Hopkins meets a woman named Pam who came in from St. Paul, MN. Pam wanted him to dye her hair grey so she doesn’t have to worry about her roots growing out. But he said no!
In his video caption, Hopkins points out that such a drastic change to a cold silver is largely impossible, especially for those wanting to keep their hair healthy:
“Many of us reach a point when we want to grow out our natural gray hair. Pam was ready. Though things have improved it is next to impossible to color natural hair to a natural looking gray. Especially in an hour and a half.”
When he takes a look at Pam’s hair, he tells her it’s going to take a good year to get to grey – and she is floored!
We even find out at the end of the video that Hopkins himself had to shave his head in order to get his own silver locks to grow in – something Pam is probably not willing to try.
Instead of just bleaching her whole head, he tells her that the best route is to do many tiny highlights that will start the transformation. That will keep her from needing a drastic haircut if bleach dries out her ends and damages the hair shaft.
While plenty of commenters on the story said the complete transformation to grey could be done, Hopkins is clearly interested in the long-term health of her hair.
For the highlights, he hands her over to his staff to get the ball rolling.
Since it’s going to be a full makeover, she’s getting her makeup done as well after the color processes but before we see the results.
Pam is already looking lighter and brighter and her hair has some natural curl in it that Hopkins decides to use to her advantage.
Impressed with the highlights and makeup, now it’s time to talk haircut.
We see some prominent grey roots, so it’ll be interesting to see how she reacts to the final look once her hair is dry.
The two decide to work with her curls to give her volume as opposed to the straight flat look and bangs she walked in with. Hopkins also talks to her about how the geometry of her face suggests a particular type of cut that will be more flattering.
While you can already see some of the transformation after her makeup is done, it’s nothing compared to the final result!
Pam admits that she had no idea her hair could actually be as curly as it turned out since she spends a lot of time straightening it, but she said now she’s ready to “release my curly girl.”
Between her bright new look, multi-dimensional highlights, and stunning makeup, it’s hard to believe she’s the same person who walked in earlier. And she’s thrilled, saying that her final look is exactly what she wanted but couldn’t quite articulate.
