Being just 23-years-old and learning that you will be giving birth to three babies all at the same time is quite the news for one person to handle.
But that’s what happened to Becki-Jo Allen of Liverpool.
“I had been being very sick and had a really bad headache so I booked an early scan and that was when I found out I was expecting triplets,” Becki-Jo told Echo. “It was the biggest shock of my life! We haven’t got any triplets in the family so it came completely out of the blue.”
Becki-Jo, who already had a daughter, had no idea the journey she was about to embark on. Her little babies —Roman, Rocco, and Rohan— ended up having to spend six weeks in the intensive care unit.
But eventually, they were allowed to go home with their momma.
“Now they are absolutely thriving, getting bigger and meeting all their milestones,” Becki-Jo said.
That’s when she was in store for yet another surprise.
She found out that her children are one in 200 million. People kept telling her that her babies looked a lot alike. DNA tests eventually confirmed that her babies were in fact naturally conceived identical triplets.
This came as another shock because she was told otherwise.
“When they were in the hospital, the doctors said they were non-identical, but since they came home lots of people have said they can’t tell them apart,” Becki told Daily Mail. “I was surprised because I expected them to be non-identical/ But then I’m normally the only one who can tell them apart, so that does explain a lot!’”
She did, however, have a little trouble with that a first.
“When they were newborns it was quite hard to tell which one was which, but I never got them mixed up myself,” she said. “They’ve all got dark birthmarks between their eyebrows, but Roman’s is slightly darker than the others’, and Rohan has got a birthmark on his leg as well.”
She said it’s their unique personalities that really makes them stand apart.
“Rohan is the loud one, he’s always shouting. Rocco is normally quite laid-back, but he can be feisty too, while Roman is usually complaining that he doesn’t want to share,” she explains. “They’re always crawling about after the same toy, trying to get to it before their brothers do.”
