Most people don’t see car wrecks as blessings, but that’s not the case for Aimee Green.
When the car spun out of control and wrecked, she was taken to the hospital, where they told her she had a brain tumor above her ear.
She was shocked by the news.
She said:
“I immediately started to cry and felt like my world completely ended. The first thought I could think of was how I was so close to finally chasing and reaching my dreams and now it’s all up in the air.”
They would have to operate to remove the tumor, but she was determined to finish college first. They warned her that after her surgery, she might not remember certain things and could struggle with other things. She felt that it was best to graduate before the surgery.
She said:
“Not knowing what my future holds for me is having me on the edge all the time. I’ve always been the type of girl who plans everything and has like three monthly calendars where I keep everything organized and now all of it is changed. There are so many unforeseen complications and possibilities for me. I’m definitely having a hard time coping and dealing with all of this.”
The doctor agreed that it was OK to wait for the surgery.
They told her that had she not been involved the car accident, they might not have found the tumor and it may have grown bigger and become more dangerous. She added:
“Because they are a lot of complications and problems after surgery regarding memory loss and spatial memory loss, I might not be the same afterward. I definitely wanted to make sure I can graduate now while I can. This is the main reason I’m focused on graduating early. Because I may not ever be able to come back and do it.”
Aimee is going to school to be a social worker.
She grew up in an unstable family until she was taken in by her grandparents. She said that she is glad they gave her a good life and that she wouldn’t be who she is without them. She shared:
“I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them. They made me who I am. Most people don’t have anyone like that in their lives, so I aim and strive to be that for children and others who don’t have that supportive role model cheering them on throughout life. We all need someone to push us and guide us, and I just want to be able to do that.”
Aimee’s friend Laura wanted to help with her treatment, so she created a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses.
She knows that Aimee would do the same for her, and she wanted to make things a little less stressful in her life, so she can focus on school and then her surgery. Laura said:
“She’s the kind of friend that would always be there for you when you need her, so now it’s my turn to be that friend. That’s why I set the GoFundMe up. It’s time for someone else to help her since she helps everyone else. She’s a fighter, and she won’t let the situation she’s currently in stop her from reaching her goal of helping others in need.”
Aimee is on track to graduate college next month.
Once she has her surgery and recovers, she is hoping to start her career. She is worried that memory loss might be a problem, but it’s nothing that she can’t overcome.
