Jenine-Lacette DShazer spotted a homeless man with his adorable pup in his arms on a chilly winter day in Fresno, California. Immediately, the woman went to her car to grab a blanket, a roll of toilet paper and some water and food to bring to the homeless man and his dog.

“He didn’t ask me for money or anything; he was just appreciative, first of all, that I noticed him, that I talked to him, that I didn’t treat him as less-than,” she says, “and he was exceptionally grateful.”

The man thanked Jenine-Lacette for everything that she did for him, but the kind woman didn’t stop there.

The homeless man, 60-year-old Clifford James Herbert, said that he was dying of cancer and only had a couple of weeks left to live.

He had one dying Christmas wish: to see his dog Baby grow up in a loving forever home before he passed away.

Clifford had been struggling with his health for a long time. The man used to be a farm worker and had his own mechanical shop, but became disabled after a heart surgery and tracheotomy in 2006 due to complications. He lost his job and became homeless.

A cancerous tumor in his body spread to his brain and doctors said that there’s little they could do. They gave him six more weeks to live, two months tops.

Luckily, Clifford met Jenine-Lacette who was devoted to making his wish come true.

The kind woman created an online GoFundMe account for Clifford and Baby so that Clifford wouldn’t have to spend his last days on the streets. According to The Fresno Bee, at least $3,800 was raised. Clifford finally had some cash to buy proper meals for himself and for Baby and was also given a warm and nice place to sleep at a motel in Fresno.

“She’s my whole world,” Herbert says of Baby. “She’s my best friend. She protects me.”

His adorable pup was being abused by her owner with a flashlight and even fought the abusive owner to make sure Baby was safe.

“I told him, ‘I want that dog.’ He said no, and the fight was on,” Herbert said.

Clifford and Baby have been best friends ever since.
