“I don’t allow my disability to define me.” – Nila Morton
Meet the beautiful Nila Morton of Greenville, South Carolina. She’s not your usual 21-year old young lady, she’s a fighter and has already achieved so much in her life.
Nila was born with a very rare condition known as Ullrich or Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy (UCMD). Nila is the 96th person to have this condition in the world.
Ullrich will cause respiratory problems along with muscle weakness; that’s why Nila uses her wheelchair to be able to move around. Though, with the use of her walker or if there is someone helps her, she is able to walk.
Nila at the young age of 21 is already a Psychology major at USCU, she is also the first lady with a disability to be able to compete in the Miss SC Teen USA pageant!
“I don’t allow my disability to define me. I’m known to be a young lady who is brave, strong, and an inspiration,” Nila said to Lovewhatmatters.
She also speaks on different events to be able to spread awareness about disabilities.
This young lady aims to make a huge difference.
“I want them to be able to not stop them from living life. The journey wasn’t easy because I went through sickness, bullying, and even low self-esteem to get to right where I am now,” Nila beautifully shared.
Nila received many rude comments; this at times caused her self-esteem to be really low. It sure wasn’t easy for her.
Over the weekend last February 02, 2020 after Nila got dressed up and was ready to go out, she saw herself and she felt beautiful.
I was kinda nervous about posting bc this is way outta my comfort zone & Ik some ppl will judge but I felt beautiful 🥰🖤✨ pic.twitter.com/sr0RyOHda4

She decided she wanted to post her photos. Even though she had second thoughts, she went right ahead and posted it.
“The day that my post went viral, I was studying, honestly,” Nila explained told Bored Panda.
She didn’t expect anything from her post; instead, she knew there will be people who’d comment not-so-good things.
“Sundays are my study days, so I usually don’t be on social media. When I took a break, I saw how my post went viral and how most people loved my photos,” she continued.
Her photos received nothing but beautiful, encouraging, and positive feedback! Her post to date already has 36.1K Retweets and 523.4K Likes!
Comments of empowerment and support poured in. One guy said:
“Out of your comfort zone should be your New Zone.”
Another comment said that she absolutely doesn’t need to blur her chair!
Nila was so touched that she posted another Tweet. She said she initially felt scared to share the photos but she wanted she was really thankful of the people and love that she received.
“I’m human so I do have my days when I wish I could change something,” she said to Bored Panda. “[But] usually, I love how I look. I love my disability and my wheelchair. I call it my throne. That’s how I have confidence.”
We’re proud of you, Nila and to everyone who’s experiencing trials and challenges, people with disabilities who choose to fight and make a difference not just for them, but for everyone!
