Life is still very much a mystery as is the state of being in a coma.

While the person might seem unresponsive and lifeless, that might just be on the outside.

Lyndee Pellettiere-Swapp says she could hear all the conversations around her when she was deemed to be in a coma. And those conversations are what saved her life.

Lyndee’s son Steven came home one day to find his mother unconscious.

He immediately called 911 to try and get help for her.

This resulted in Lyndee being on life support and in a coma for 12 days.

“Everything can be taken away. You can wake up one day and everything is fine, and then your life is a mess,” Steven told azfamily.com. “Keep your family close and don’t let them go.”

Doctors exhausted their options and told Lyndee’s family that there was nothing more that they could do for her.

This left her family with having to make a horrible decision no family should ever have to make.

So, they decided to take Lyndee off life support as to respect her wishes of having her organs preserved so they could be donated.

They believed that Lyndee was in a deep state of sleep or unconsciousness where she wasn’t aware of what was going on around her.

But Lyndee says this wasn’t true at all.

She knew exactly what was going on and could hear it all.

“I remember people talking to me,” she said. “I remember when people came to visit, my niece reading to me. [Doctors] told [my family] that I would start to make noises when they turned off life support.”

“I was very agitated. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t talk, couldn’t respond. I could just hear conversations around me and about me,” Lyndee continued. “I remember a doctor opening my eyes, messing with me, and telling my family I was not reacting.”

Thinking about what Lyndee must have gone through is absolutely terrifying.

She was trying to speak and let her family know she was alive inside as they were basically talking about putting her to death but wasn’t able to move.

Thankfully, the words her husband uttered gave her the strength to push past and respond to let them know she was still present.

“In my head it was very clear what I was saying, but it wasn’t to them,” she said. “I was finally able to get out ‘I’m a fighter,’ which is what my husband was whispering in my ear. [He said] ‘I need you to fight.'”

And with that Lyndee came back to her family.

“I don’t take for granted that I get to come home and kiss my mom,” Steven said. “Every day I come home from work, seeing her and talking to her.”

Lyndee said she hopes her story will encourage others who are in the same situation to fight for their loved ones.

“Just because you are not conscious does not mean you cannot hear,” she said. “So you should talk to your loved ones if you are in that situation. They hear you.”

Lyndee ended up passing away about a year later but her family was forever grateful for the extra year they had with her.
