What does the power of makeup mean?
From art to fashion to confidence booster, it means a lot of things for a lot of people.

To narrow it down, when it comes to video content, such as tutorials, โthe power of makeupโ is a subjective and ever-changing statement that our multifaceted society is quick to use, by making snap superficial judgements to pigeonhole the makeup user/artist into two variation of thoughts.
The first thought: It can be viewed as an informative before-and-after makeup tutorial thatโs often flaunted by young social media influencers eager to share their step-by-step routine with their online community, which is then showered with encouraging comments.

The second thought: The before-and-after tutorial can be seen as a shocking transformation thatโs similar to the literary childhood fairy tale starring the transition of the ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. This train of thought often follows individuals that donโt fit the mold of societal beauty standards or sport pronounced eye wrinkles and wisps of grey locks.
It goes without saying that looks and age play a huge influence on which thought way the pendulum swings.
Monique Parent, an American actress widely known for her roles as intense charismatic characters, published a Facebook clip titled โThe Incredible Power of Makeup.โ Using an array of beauty ingredients and makeup tactics, the video showcases the 52-year-oldโs clean bare face transitioning into a glamorous storm-like superhero look, blended with dramatic pops and streaks of purple.

The video received over 100k reactions and close to 40k comments, many whom applauded her natural beauty and makeup skills. There were also the (close-minded) individuals who chose to participate in the latter train of thought, leaving a trail of hurtful and blatantly rude comments.
Like a true superhero, Parent wasnโt phased by them or their comments.

Instead, she responds with class and grace:
โI am a 52 year old woman. I have spent 28 years as a professional actress and in that time, I have learned how to transform myself with makeup and hair. I am 100% comfortable in my own skin and generally go without makeup when I am not working/auditioning/attending red carpet events. There are 365 days in the year and I highly encourage everyone to have fun with your appearance in some way on one or two of those days. For you. For fun.โ
Her comment was followed with thousands of thumbs up and heart sign emojis.

For Parent, makeup is used for her personal enjoyment and for the pursuit of fun. She sums up her message with a reminder that true beauty does not rest in the power of makeup:
โBeauty shows in how we treat one another. Rather than tearing down a stranger on the internet and demonstrating what ugliness is, try and make the world a bit more beautiful. Be kind to one another.โ
