For those paying attention to entertainment news lately, sexual harassment controversies have been appearing left and right.
As a result of all these scandals, critics and writers have taken aim at a culture of silence which allows these indiscretions to keep happening. Because these incidents are so unfair, they lead to a lot of anger. They also create an appetite for justice or payback towards these offenders. While not every case ends in fairness or retribution, sometimes things do work out.
One shining example has recently come out of China.
The footage, which has recently gone viral, was taken from an elevator security camera.
When the video starts, a woman is standing in an elevator checking her phone. Still, it only takes a moment before the man in the elevator begins acting inappropriately. First, the man comes up behind her and starts looking over her shoulder, as if he’s trying to read her messages. As soon as the woman notices, she makes it clear that she’s uncomfortable and surprised.
The man takes a step back—but things continue from there.
After that, the two switch sides on the elevator and she starts looking at her phone again—but the man is still moving around.
Once again, the man starts getting inappropriately in her space. First, he starts to sneak up behind her. Then, after a moment, he slides his hand onto her shoulder. At this point, the woman has had enough. With one hand, she swipes his hand off of her shoulder and turns around to face him.
Squaring up to the strange man, she swings at him and hits him in the face!
The first hit lands squarely and knocks the man back into the wall.
Still, the woman isn’t finished and the clip continues. After that, the man seems to take some steps forward and she kicks him in between the legs—hard. The man bends over after that, clearly in serious pain now. Finally, she puts her hands behind his head and knees him in the head!
After that, it’s over: the man slumps over on the floor and the woman walks away, triumphant.
It’s easy to see why this clip is bringing joy to so many people.
Anyone who thinks they can intimidate others and get away with it is wrong—still, the man likely didn’t expect this woman to defend herself as effectively as she did! And look, we’re not saying violence is the answer to all the world’s problems.
Still, self-defense is justifiable—and this is pretty satisfying.
Worth noting on this story is that the woman in the video is Du Qiao, a TV host and actress in Beijing. Though she has claimed the incident is real as was depicted (according to an article in Mashable), the moves in the video do seem a little too smooth. Regardless, people on the internet seem to be getting a kick out of it (pun intended).
