When do we give up hope? Well, if you’re a mom, the answer is likely never.
A mother’s love knows no bounds, as they say. Those boundaries have certainly been tested for one mother.
When her daughter met a grisly fate, she sustained both of them with love and a whole lot of hope.
Jennifer Flewellen was driving to work on September 25, 2017. She was just 35 back then. She dropped off her kids to school not knowing it would be the last time she would see them for years.
According to her husband, Flewellen began feeling lightheaded.
She then veered off the road and drove her car straight to a pole. She was rushed to the hospital but even the prompt care didn’t mitigate the damage.
Flewellen was in a life-threatening situation. It was so bad that they had to place her on life support and in a medically induced coma.
Peggy Means, her mother, lived through the entire ordeal with her.
At first, doctors and other medical staff were talking her into ending her daughter’s suffering. They told her that Flewellen would just get worse as she lay in a vegetative state.
But Peggy refused to believe that was the only outcome for her daughter. She held out hope. Not only for herself but for her grandchildren also.
Means didn’t want to hear any of it. No matter how much the doctors tried to convince her, Means had to place her hope that her daughter would wake up one day.
The journey was long and arduous for them both.
Means transferred her daughter from one long-term care facility after the other just so she could make sure Flewellen was getting the best care.
Luckily enough for her, the company she was working in allowed her to work from home.
This meant that Means could see her daughter six days a week.
On the one day that she couldn’t, which is Sundays, she goes to visit her daughter’s children to check on them and their needs.
She strolled with Flewellen around the facility. Sometimes, she’d even treat her on “spa days.” Then, one day, their journey culminated in a single moment – a peal of laughter.
Means was walking Flewellen when she cracked a joke.
Then, she could’ve sworn she saw her daughter laugh. She made other statements as well whenever Flewellen had a lucid moment.
While non-verbal, her daughter could answer her questions correctly. It was a miracle.
After five years of sleeping, Flewellen is finally awake. The journey wasn’t done, however. As she became more conscious, Means fought hard so that Flewellen could get the rehabilitation programs she needed.
Flewellen missed a lot but through her mother’s love, she woke up just in time for her son’s games.
“About a year ago, I had it in my mind that she was going to come to my game, she was going to come to my senior year, senior night and things like that,” Julian told WBND-LD. “I’ve talked about it for a while, and I dreamed of it and prayed for it, and it happened.”
While Flewellen is still undergoing a series of therapies to help her get back on her feet, Means was already so grateful for the people who helped them.
But in the end, those who witnessed their story all said one thing – the story is about Flewellen, and that story would never be written if not for Means who held on to hope, who was generous in her love, and the rock that anchored their journey.
