While the scourage of bullying in our schools may have been exacerbated by the invention of social media, it’s nothing new.
The punishment of those who act and look different from those don’t is something that has been going on for centuries.
Bullying is something that affects many people.
The funny thing is that often times bullies will grow up to be brilliant contributors to society leaving their tormentors to look up to them while they live their bland, uneventful, ordinary, and boring status quo lives.
Even celebrities aren’t immune to bullying. Some of them were prepared in their childhood for the negativity they would receive in the media and on social media as famous adults.
One of those celebrities was Winona Ryder. You know, the Golden Globe-winning actress who stars in one of the most highly acclaimed series on Netflix right now.
It’s called Stranger Things… you may have heard of it. Her former bullies probably have.
Stories that Ryder shared about her bullies in Nigel Goodall’s book Winona Ryder: The Biography have recently surfaced in the media again and gone viral via Twitter user @bleuvalentine, according to PEOPLE.
And these stories are pretty horrible.
“I was wearing an old Salvation Army shop boy’s suit,” the actress said in an excerpt from the book. “As I went to the bathroom I heard people saying, ‘’Hey, f—-t [a homophobic slur].’ They slammed my head into a locker. I fell to the ground and they started to kick the s–t out of me. I had to have stitches.”
What’s even more horrible about this story is that her bullies were never punished… she was!
“The school kicked me out, not the bullies,” Ryder recalled.
And the bullying didn’t stop there. Ryder told Marie Claire UK that the bullying continued at age 17 even when she landed major movie roles.
“I remember thinking, ‘Ooh, [“Beetlejuice”] is like the number-one movie. This is going to make things great at school,’” she recently told Marie Claire UK. “But it made things worse. They called me a witch.”
Eventually, she got to put her bullies in their place and got the satisfaction she long deserved.
“Years later, I went to a coffee shop and I ran into one of the girls who’d kicked me, and she said, ‘Winona, Winona, can I have your autograph?’” Ryder said in the biography. “And I said, ‘Do you remember me? Remember in seventh grade you beat up that kid?’ And she said, ‘Kind of.’ And I said, ‘That was me. Go f— yourself.’”
According to @bleuvalentine, “Winona Ryder is that b@tch!” And we’d have to agree on that one.
