Dubbed the “the people’s princess”, Diana, Princess of Wales, was a fashion icon and humanitarian known for her giant heart.

In a 1995 interview with Martin Bashir, Diana said:

“I think the biggest disease this world suffers from in this day and age is the disease of people feeling unloved.”

Throughout her life, Diana worked for a variety of causes, focusing on individuals she considered to be “rejected” from society, like victims of HIV, AIDS, and leprosy. In fact, when she shook the hand of an AIDS patient in 1987, she was the first member of the Royal family to do so without gloves.

While Diana was known for loving the forgotten people of the world, there were two people she loved more than anybody— her sons, William and Harry.

Last year, for the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death, ITV release a documentary called Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. In it, William and heir motherHarry speak candidly about their relationship with t— even revealing details surrounding their last conversation before her death.

“She was our mum. She is still our mum. And of course, as a son I would say this, she was the best mum in the world,” Harry revealed.

“She smothered us with love, that’s for sure.”

In the documentary, the boys detail their regrets surrounding their last conversation with their mother.

While Diana was in Paris with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed, 41, the boys were with their father and cousins at Balmoral, the Queen’s private Scottish estate. That day, when Diana phoned the boys, they were having so much fun with their cousins that they wanted to keep the conversation short.

“Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say ‘goodbye’, ‘see you later’ and ‘we’re going to go off’,” William said.

“If I’d known what would happen I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it. But that phone call sticks in my mind quite heavily.”

As can be imagined, William and Harry were devastated by the death of their mother and were angry by the actions of those on the scene.

“I think one of the hardest things to come to terms with,” Harry said, “is the fact that the people that chased her into the tunnel were the same people that were taking photographs of her while she was dying in the backseat of the car.”

It took a long time for the boys to grieve their mother, and William admits there’s a lot more pain “that still needs to be let out.” Despite their grief, however, each is doing their best to continue Diana’s legacy.

“Now all I want to do is try and fill the holes that my mother has left, and that’s what it’s about for us— is trying to make a difference and in making a difference, making her proud,” Harry said.

“She was the Princess of Wales, and she stood for so many things, but deep down inside for us, she was a mother. And we will miss our mother, and I wonder every single day what it would be like having her around.”
