Phedre Fitton was 64 years old when she was diagnosed with cancer. After battling it for 5 years, she was ultimately defeated. She did have time, however, to plan an amazing prank on her husband. Her joke kept her memory alive in his heart long after her body was gone.

Just before her death, Phedre had one request of her husband, Nigel. She asked him to keep watering the plants in the bathroom. That seemed simple enough.

Nigel was faithful about his task. He watered the plants every day, wanting to prove that he could fulfill this last request. After years of following his late wife’s wishes, Nigel learned that he had been duped.

As it turned out, the plants in the bathroom were made entirely of plastic. As he poured water into their pots every day, Nigel never realized that his work was futile. It was not until he was ready to move into a retirement home that he discovered his wife’s clever deceit.

Nigel’s daughter, Antonia Nicol, came over from London to help her father move. When she saw the plants for herself, she couldn’t help but laugh. Her father had no clue that he had been watering plastic for all those years.

As she made this new information apparent to Nigel, the two shared a chuckle together. They couldn’t help but feeling that Phedre was with them still, laughing away at her husband’s blindness.

“Before my mum passed away, she gave my dad strict instructions to water the plants in the bathroom,” Antonia shared on Twitter. “He’s been religiously watering them & keeping them alive. They look so amazing he decided to take them to his new home, only to discover they are plastic!” She lightheartedly added, “[I] can hear my mum chuckling.”

Antonia was grateful to her mother for providing this heartwarming moment. Her clever trick had kept her husband on his toes for years, and now the two shared something special to laugh about.

“It was only when we flew over to help him move we all realized the plants were plastic,” she explained to Huffington Post. “He said, ‘I wondered why they still looked so good.’ We really laughed about it and it was lovely to think that my mum was still there with us.”

Antonia mentioned that her father had been confused about the plants for years. When he saw the water on the floor, he had assumed that the toilet was broken. It all made sense now.

Phedre might have had to leave her husband physically, but she will always remain with him in spirit. Her hilarious prank reminds us that our loved ones are never truly gone.
