With its Mediterranean climate, laid-back lifestyle, and abundance of recreational activities for seniors, it’s easy to see why so many people choose to retire to in this gorgeous west coast city.

If you’re considering retiring in this part of the country, you’ll want to know exactly why it’s an ideal place over other parts of the country. There are plenty of beautiful retirement destinations, of course – so what makes Santa Barbara unique?

The Weather is Lovely

Perhaps the biggest benefit of Santa Barbara is its weather. The year-round temperatures stay mainly in the 70s, so you’ll be able to spend plenty of time outdoors and stay active. Thanks to the ocean breezes, summers are bearably cooler than the inland communities, and winters tend to be warmer, too.

It’s Not Too Big

With a population of just over 90,000, Santa Barbara isn’t overwhelmingly big. You won’t feel like a tiny fish in a big pond here – but there are still plenty of little communities to join that will help you feel at home in this city.

The Santa Barbara portion of the California Coastal Trail might just become your favorite morning walking route, and the Santa Barbara coastline is perfect for sailing or kayaking – or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, surfing! You can also whale watch at Stearns Wharf or ride a bike along the city’s bike paths and trails.

You’re Well Covered, Health-Wise

Your health and wellness is more important than ever when you retire, and you’ll be happy to know that Santa Barbara takes the health of its community seriously. There are two hospitals in the local area, as well as more than 50 senior living communities and great transportation options for getting to your doctor’s appointments.

The City is Pretty

Santa Barbara has a pretty interesting rule in place: no billboards are allowed, and any signs have to be small. This means that you can appreciate the beauty of the city’s bustling urban spots and shopping districts without being distracted by information you don’t want to see.

Transport is Good

There’s plenty to do in Santa Barbara, and with the good weather, you may feel like you’re on vacation 24/7. But if you do fancy a trip away, there’s the Santa Barbara Airport to take advantage of. Amtrak also has service from Santa Barbara, and the local bus service, Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District, is very good.

There’s Only One Downside

The only real issue with living in Santa Barbara is the cost of living. It’s more than 100 percent higher than the national average, which obviously isn’t great if you’re looking to retire on a budget. But if you’ve saved up plenty of cash and can afford a luxurious retirement, this beautiful European-esque city is well worth considering.
