Most of us have heard growing up that “If you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all.”

Well, at the very least you shouldn’t say terribly mean things to a complete stranger for no reason.

That’s what a Wendy’s employee did to a customer who had mental health issues. And unfortunately for that employee, his or her petty cruelty cost them their job after the story gained national attention, including from Wendy’s headquarters.

Mobile Alabama mother Teenishia Bush said that her 15-year-old son was bullied at a Wendy’s when his fast food receipt called him “lil ugly dude.”

“We get the recipet and look at it and it says ‘lil ugly dude’ and I’m like really,” Bush told WKRG.

Bush’s son, Quenterus Brown, was wondering why the staff behind the counter was laughing before he got his order, then he spotted ‘lil ugly dude’ written on the receipt.

“It hurt my feelings, it made me cry I was embarrassed and I felt bad,” Brown said.

Bush said that her son struggles with his mental health issues daily and did not find the situation funny or amusing whatsoever.

“You don’t go around making fun of people, you don’t know their situation, that’s bullying,” said Bush.

Bush said she was shocked to see this type of behavior from a corporate restaurant.

“Don’t just put anything on the receipt,” she said. “Make your customer feel welcomed to come back and shop or visit your store again.”

Bush was so upset that she shared a picture of the receipt on Facebook saying that the act was “unacceptable and unprofessional” that her son was extremely “embarrassed and upset” and that the “whole store was laughing at him include the manager.”

That post, which is no longer available, ended up going viral on social media and Wendy’s ended up issuing the following statement:

“Wendy’s has been a part of this community for many years, and we were certainly disappointed to learn that one of our employees treated a guest in such a rude manner. We take this seriously, and we no longer employ this individual. When we learned of the incident, we immediately contacted the guest. We apologized to the young man and his mother and look forward to welcoming them back to Wendy’s again.”

So, while these employees were trying to be cute and get a few laughs in, one of them got fired.

Being a jerk may make you get a few laughs and help you to feel better about yourself at someone else’s expense, but sometimes it comes back to bite you.
