When you go home and lock your doors at night, you should be confident that youโre safe and protected. Your home is your private space where you can be alone with your thoughts. More and more, however, weโre hearing cases of people at home who werenโt as alone as they thoughtโฆ

Tracy, whose last name has been withheld, was a South Carolina resident who had been hearing some strange things in her house. The single mother of five had told her children about the noises, but they assured her it was all in her head. In an interview with ABC News, she recalled:
โThe kids were saying, โYouโre getting old. Youโre hearing things. Youโre crazy.'โ
โI kept hearing a bumpinโ, thumpinโ noise. It was either something or somebody was in the attic.โ

One night, while Tracy was on the computer, she heard a noise above and saw nails popping out from the bedroom ceiling. Later, when she was awoken by more banging at 2:30 AM, she called her nephew to come and investigate.

Climbing into Tracyโs attic, her nephew was stunned to see a full-grown man standing there.
It turns out he and Tracy had dated twelve years earlier. Judging from the evidence, he had been secretly living in her attic for the past few weeks.
Stunned, the family phoned the authoritiesโ but the man, smiling, walked off without any explanation before the police could arrive. Her nephew said the man had been able to watch Tracy in her bedroom through a crack in the air vent.
โHe had packed all the old coats and jackets into the heating unit was sleeping in the heating unit,โ said Tracy.
โItโs got me flabbergasted. How can you look at someone through an air vent?โ

Whatโs even more unsettling is the family has no idea how he got into their home.
As mentioned, these terrifying stories seem to be occurring more often.
Last year, Amber Dawnโs heart froze in her chest when she realized sheโd been living with a stranger for the last six months. Upon moving into the apartment, Amber immediately started hearing footsteps in the attic. Then weird things started happening.

One day, after leaving her new puppy in the bathroom while she went to work, Amber got a call that the room had flooded. Expecting to come home to a grim scene, she was puzzled to find the puppy safe in the sink.
โThereโs no way she could have gotten into the sink,โ Amber later told the Fraser Coast Chronicle.
โShe was a little puppy; the toilet was far enough away from the sink that she wouldnโt have been able to climb.โ
Later, however, Amber realized sheโd been living with a stranger for the past 6 months. Authorities located food, a book, and a sleeping bag in her atticโ but sensing something was off, the man had escaped before police arrived.

The thought alone is enough to give me the heebie-jeebies.
