Nicholas Tate makes about $60 dollars a day working at a Newcastle, Oklahoma Walmart. On Friday night, he decided he would give an entire day’s pay just to ease the struggle of a foster mother who was struggling to buy groceries.

It was almost the end of his shift when a woman and her three children were on his line.

The children were a little fussy and their mom looked a little bit flustered.

“She was coming through, and she had two little girls and a baby,” Tate told KFOR. “So, I looked at her and said ‘One of those days?”

Tate enjoys interacting with customers. It’s one of his favorite parts about his job.

“I’m a big people person,” he said. “So, I just love getting to talk to people, and hear about their day and just see how they’re doing.”

During their conversation, the mother explained that she was fostering the baby and was using WIC, a federal food assistance program, for the first time.

She said she didn’t know how it was going to go since the program only pays for certain items and specific brands of baby formula. She apologized to the cashier as the line behind her started to grow.

“She had a good amount of items and most of them went through, but she apparently didn’t have the right formula and it wouldn’t go through,” Tate told CBS News. “We had to run a separate transaction for the rest.”

Some very rude people who were in line behind her started grumbling and throwing her the side eye as she struggled with her purchase.

“At this point, a lady we know came up and asked why I was causing so many problems,” the woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, said on Facebook. “I told her I was just failing as a foster mom because I can’t figure out WIC and almost burst into tears right there.”

That’s when Tate stepped into help and said it was God that told him to.

“I felt like God was telling me to pay for it,” Tate said. “The second it didn’t work I swiped my card.”

He paid her $60 tab and told her that she was doing a great thing and being the best foster mom that she could be, which was more than enough.

Even though Tate isn’t a rich man, he decided he would give up an entire day’s pay just to ease this woman’s burden.

“It made my heart really happy,” Tate told CBS News. “It confirmed that I’m doing what God wants me to do.”

And it made the woman happy too. This time she actually broke down in tears at his kind gesture and went home with a little bit stress that day knowing that there are people out there who are willing to help lighten your load.
