24-year-old Nikita Williams had the tough position of being the last contestant to audition on The Voice South Africa. With all of the judge’s teams full but one, she needed to make a powerhouse performance that stood out in order to be the last one added to the competition.
“I am very nervous for today. I am on the Voice. But do you know what? You can do it.” says Nikita as she walks onto the stage.
To prove her worth, Nikita chose “You and I” by Lady Gaga as her song choice. However, she decided to put her own spin on it. Adding a swinging rhythm and some country blues, she instantly wows the judges.
The stakes were high as only one spot remained on judge Rikado Makhado’s team.
With all of the other judge’s team’s full, the three other judges, Francois Van Coke, Lira, and Riana Nel all were peeking out from behind their chairs. They had to see who was behind this amazing voice.
It didn’t take long for everyone to get in on the fun. Judge Rikado Mahkado stood up and waved his hands back and forth, encouraging the audience to join in.
She got only a few lines into the song before judge Rikado Mahkado had his hands poised to press the buzzer.
Judge Rikado Makhado looked over at judge Francois Van Coke and motioned for him to come over and join him. Judge Lira couldn’t miss out on this action and the two went over and sat on the arms of judge Rikado Makhado’s chair, ready to help.
There was no doubt that they were sending her on in the competition. With no room left on the chair, judge Riana Nel came over to join the group by positioning her hand to press the buzzer.
The four judges, with their hands in a stack, pressed the final buzzer sending Nikita on in the competition.
The audience went with applause and the judges stood to cheer her on as she belted out the final note of the song. Her powerful voice still carried the note through the cheers and applause. Nikita’s parents were thrilled as they watched from behind the stage.
During her interview after her performance with host, Louw Mulder, Nikita noted that the performance was, “very nervewracking” as she described the pressure of trying not to miss her cue.
When asked about her song choice, Nikita said that most people assume the type of songs that she will sing based on her appearance.
“When people look at me, a lot of times they’re like, she’s a jazz singer or maybe like R&B. I actually really enjoy country music.” explained Nikita.
Wanting to be an artist who performs county music is the goal that Nikita strives to work towards. With not a lot of country singers in South Africa, she hopes to someday be one of them.
Although Nikita did not make it past the battles on The Voice South Africa, she still has amazing talent that deserved to be showcased on this platform.
