Many people think the world is becoming a more unfriendly place. This story will make them think differently.
The modern world can seem like a scary place. Most of the stories on the news talk about people doing terrible things to other people.
But the fact is that there are still many, many good people in the world.
Some people will help one another, without considering their outward differences. Take this story, for example…
In Mobile, Alabama three people were recently sitting in a doctor’s office, waiting for their appointment. Two were an African American mother and her young child. The other was an older white man. The mother, Jade West, was trying to hold onto her son while filling out several forms.
It wasn’t easy. The child was squirming, and the paperwork was confusing. The man, Joe Hale, was sat across from them.
He walked over to them and said something that surprised everyone present:
“Ma’am, would you like for me to hold that baby for you while you do that?”
Everyone else in the room was shocked and relieved. Alabama, after all, doesn’t have the best history of equality. But here, a kindly old man had just offered to help a young mother, with no regards to how they looked.
Jade then handed Joe her child. She calmly filled out the forms as Joe cradled and hummed to the baby.
The moment was far too heartwarming for everyone around. They loved it.
Natasha Wilson, who was sitting just in front of the scene playing out, decided to take a picture of this special moment. The image below shows West happily getting on with the forms as Joe hugs and sings to the child.
This moment has certainly struck a chord with many people.
On Facebook, Natasha Wilson’s original image has been liked, hearted and reacted to over 1.3 million times in the space of just over a week. It has also received over 78,000 comments and 400,000 shares.
Wilson initially blurred out Jade’s face, as she was unsure whether or not she would be happy to have her image shared. But the mother was more than happy to talk about this inspiring moment.
“I felt good, especially after he sat down and started talking. It just felt right. It felt good.” Jade said.
She also said that she was thankful for the kindness of a stranger and that it was good to see something positive happen for a change.
And if anyone’s faith in humanity weren’t already restored, then the words of Joe are sure to melt their hearts:
“I didn’t care if the baby was black, green, purple. Didn’t matter to me. I treat all children that way.”
When posting the photo, Natasha stated, “Racism is still VERY real in our society today BUT THIS MAN GAVE ME HOPE & a sweet memory I’ll never forget!!”
Many of the photo’s comments are as positive as the moment itself and show just how good humans can be.
