Scrambled eggs, eggs over easy, poached eggs, eggs benedictโ there are just so many delicious ways to prepare eggs. Sometimes when we crack open one of these delicious treats, we get a bit of a surprise, usually in the form of a double yolk. And while this is pretty exciting, one Texas farmer has definitely got you beat.
โNo double yolks, thatโs for wimps,โ he says. โWe got double eggs!โ
These are the words he exclaims when he discovers that his 7-month old chicken has laid a rare double egg. Watch the video below to see it for yourself!
According to Poultry Help, double-shelled eggs are extremely rare and no one is quite sure why it happens to certain chickens at certain times. But we do know how they are formed.
The process occurs when โan egg that is nearly ready be laid reverses direction and gets a new layer of albumen covered by a second shell,โ reports Poultry Help.
According to Countryside Network, the process that causes the egg to reverse is called a โcounter-peristalsis contractionโ.
People love to see double eggs, but interestingly, while I was researching the topic, I noticed that โdouble egg hoaxโ was a suggested search term. These things are apparently so rare that people donโt even believe they exist.
In July of 2015, YouTuber ashmorerv, who describes himself in his About section as โjust an old Texas farmer appreciating natureโ, discovered a huge egg that had been laid by his average sized 7-month chicken.
The farmer decides to investigate, recording the process and uploading the video to YouTubeโ where it has since gone viral garnering over 3 MILLION views.
As the video begins, the farmer lightly taps the egg attempting to make a small crack in the shell. When the eggs cracks, he begins peeling a section of the shell away, plunging his thumb into a large yolk.
โOh, I see another surprise!โ he says with a chuckle.
โA double egger!โ

The farmer slowly pours the yolk out of the shell, until only the inner egg remains.

When he pulls the second egg out of the giant shell, itโs the size of a regular egg that youโd buy in the grocery store. Doing what anyone would do, he decides to crack it open and see whatโs inside.
In the end, the baby egg wasnโt anything fancy, just a regular eggโbut itโs still pretty neat to watch.
