For Teacher Appreciation Week, most schools spoil their teachers with a dessert day, maybe some chair massages or pizza for lunch. Younger kids might draw some lovely pictures and older kids may high-five their educators in the hallway.
But for two teachers from Indiana, Teacher Appreciation Week ended up becoming Transformation Thursday for these dedicated educators.
Today Show’s Jill Martin headed to Michael Grimmer Middle School in Indiana where she and the entire school’s student body filled the lunchroom, ready to ambush teachers Michelle and Donna. Hoda and Jenna couldn’t wait to see who the lucky makeover candidates would be.
The women’s co-workers nominated them for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But they had no idea what was about to happen.
Donna and Michelle are described by a colleague as two women who have gone “beyond the call of duty” and two incredibly positive people.
Donna lost her daughter in a car accident. Michelle was a single mom to two boys.
“Donna carried on with such grace while mourning her daughter. Michelle worked hard to put herself through college. It’s so exciting to show them how much we love them.”
The expressions on the women’s faces when they walk into the packed lunchroom is precious. They know something is up. The ladies are complimented profusely, blushing the entire time, then surprised with the big news.
“You’re going to New York City to the Today Show studio to get pampered, glammed up and a makeover.”
Michelle says she is “happy, excited and shocked.” Donna declares that “I’ll be rocking it kids.”
Fast-forward to New York City where the hosts of Hoda & Jenna, along with the Today Show anchors, are seated near Donna and Michelle’s fellow teachers and family members. Donna walks out from behind a chalkboard and everyone gasps.
She struts down the stage fully embracing her new look. The difference is amazing!
When their friends and family remove their blindfolds, they scream and gasp in shock at the transformation. Her husband’s jaw drops and her daughter covers her mouth. Even their teacher friends mouths drop as they let out a huge gasp.
When Donna turns to look at herself in the mirror, she gasps and shouts “Oh my God!” She even shimmies at her reflection in the mirror. Clearly overjoyed by her new look the smile on her face says it all.
As Michelle strolls out from behind the chalkboard for her turn, she wows everyone. Dressed in skinny jeans and a sharp blazer, Michelle rocks a brand new cut and color along with a fresh face of makeup. She’s polished and professional.
Her friends and family gasp loudly and clutch their chests in surprise, clapping at her new appearance. But when Michelle turns to look at her makeover, she begins to cry. Both women embrace after the unveiling and leave everyone in awe.
See for yourself how amazing their transformation is. They were incredible people to begin with, but the makeover simply brought out the inner beauty that they had been hiding.
