Even though Oliver Best is a toddler, his baby brother Isaac Best is his twin. Well, technically speaking.
The boys were both born using in vitro fertilization (IVF).
They were conceived using embryos from the same batch, which technically makes them twins. Their parents Rachel and Richard Best went with IVF after trying to have a child the old-fashioned way for about four years.
And their struggle didn’t end year. It took the Bests six failed IVF attempts, which included three miscarriages before Rachel got pregnant with Oliver.
Rachel finally got pregnant on her seventh IVF cycle and had Oliver in March 2014.
“Somebody asked me the question when do people give up and I looked it up and saw that most people give up after three failed IVF attempts,” Rachel said. “But I was on my fourth by then and I felt there was no way I was going to give up. I wanted to keep going until it happened.”
Isaac was born almost two years to the day after his brother was born on March 17.
“Technically the boys are twins but they’ve been born two years apart. Issac was actually due on March 22 which is Oliver’s birthday so that would have made him exactly two years younger than his twin brother,” Rachel said. “When we look at photographs of them at the same age they do look very similar.”
The fact that they’re twins that are two years apart isn’t the only rare things about these brothers.
“We do regard them as twins but it is a bit surreal. We say they are twins but they are big twin and little twin,” Rachel said. “It was very emotional when we had Oliver because we never thought it would happen to us. To go through all that amount of treatment it was a special moment. It does get an odd reaction when we say they are twins, it’s extraordinary really.”
“Oliver is really good with Isaac, he will go over to his cot to hug him if he is crying. They definitely have a special bond,” Rachel said.
